I caved, took a short break, and started writing on my phone 😅 An idea popped up in my head regarding Serena and Dal, and I wanna finally show a side of Serena past her sunny exterior. So here are some thoughts from her perspective, before Dal learns of her secret 🔶

“I asked him why he let me drag him along into creating the Whim Club. If after all this time he was okay with all of this now that it became an official thing. (Strange thing to ask now of all times, I know!)

“I would’ve done it anyway. Figuring it all out.”

He loves magic. He might love it even more than I do… “There’s no stopping him no matter what!”, I thought.

“But I’m glad I did it this way. You made it more fun, even though it took longer.”

I laughed. I guess I did make it more…spontaneous! Then I smiled, because even then, he enjoyed it this way more. I did too.”

Using him to help myself with this pain I feel. That bonus happiness felt like a distraction. “It’s fine as long as we’re all having fun, right?”

I haven’t told him yet. He still doesn’t know.

Will he find out? What will happen if he does? Will he realize that this was what it was all about?

Will it stop being fun? Will he want to keep doing this?

⬇️ I had two goals in mind. (1) Make Dal FUN to draw, and (2) Give him more flair to support his newfound distinctiveness. What I came up with is so: a much more color-cohesive and contrasty design that incorporates his new direction, more patterns that call back to his friends as is tradition ⬇️

⬇️ I knew I had to get to the bottom of this. So with the help of a good friend, I delved into solidifying his character in a way where he's distinct and with a more specific dynamic within Syzygia. Special shoutout to my friend here. They're an amazing writer and was very easy to bounce off of! ⬇️

💤: mhm i think that kind of connection to that sun imagery is perfect
the sun, if too harsh, can be oppressing, harsh and imposing
it can be harmful even, cause anxiety and restlessness
but when cooled down, its a nice light heat on you that brightens you up
he has to get to that cooling down part though AHAH

That’s pretty interesting actually, being “cold” but also “harshly bright” at the same time
💤: that domineering aspect of him shows up more in the sun's symbolisms and stuff too
the sun is a largely vast thing, bigger than even the earth and the moon
it takes up so much of the sky
but here and there, during eclipses
it learns to share the sky
with the moon

⬇️ Thus the leadup to my first attempt in alleviating these problems: 2025 Dal! It wasn't that successful looking back. While the design had more direction, it didn't solve the root of the problem in my eyes: who even is he?? This expression STILL haunts me. I HATE IT! THAT'S NOT HIM! 😭 ⬇️

⬇️ be the point, risks him not being very compelling (BORING). As a result, I felt very restricted when it came to designing him. Even back then, I LOVED drawing Serena, but when it came to Dal, the passion really wasn't there. He was just "that guy who hangs out with Serena" pictured here (ew) ⬇️

⬇️ and out of the two, he was the less thought out of the two. I knew they were supposed to have a "foil" dynamic: classic bubbly vs. stoic, but by this point I never really tried to flesh out his personality. He was sort of just an idea meant as a point of contrast. (Look he has his ponytail LOL) ⬇️

To be honest, Dal's the one I have the MOST trouble with in every aspect: design AND writing. Before Syzygia as we know it, he was only to be paired with Serena ⬇️

An hour passes, swiftly for one, gruelingly slow for the other. Moonlight shines subtly towards the messy, unlit living room. Serena rests her head, this time on Dal’s chest. Her tears had dried, yet her voice remained shaky, trying to find its normalcy again. He offers his hand, callused, yet warm, and in response her cold yet delicate hands wrap around his.

“It still hurts.”

“It’ll be like that for a while.”

“Hey Dal?”

“Yeah?”

The moment slows to a crawl; quiet save for the ticking analog clock and a distant ambient hum. Serena’s voice is quiet, yet as resolute as can be as she clutches his hand tighter.

“Don’t disappear on me, y’hear? I’ll never forgive you if you do.”

A brief, quiet pause follows, then a quiet promise follows suit, Dal’s voice equally as resolute as he motions closer to her.

“Only if you don’t disappear on me either.”
