Towards the end of July, in some of the poorer districts of London, the old custom of making grottoes at the wall-side edge of the pavement is even now not extinct, and this despite the fact that the oyster shells, with which the grottoes were traditionally made, are now almost unknown outside the West End. In 1053 a Fohn ' London's reader saw a little boy kneeling by his grotto with a cap out ready for pennies; and in 1954 a
12-year-old Camberwell boy gave this description of a grotto made by a group of his schoolfellows on a bomb-site:
'First a big pile of sand and earth was put on a board about 3 X2. Then tunnels were burrowed into it. When the tunnels were finished, pieces of coloured china were stuck in the walls. Small rock-like stones were placed in it.
In some places a small tin lid was filled with water, these were embedded in the tunnels also. Around the outside, pieces of moss and glass covered the earth and sand, and were studded with flowers.'
Today the usual request of the grotto-builders is *Please, sir, remember the grotter' or 'Penny for the grotter'. But in districts such as Islington and Bermondsey older Londoners remember the song:

According to a correspondent to The Times (26 November 1957) in Mitcham, Surrey, 'Grotter Day' not merely survives but flourishes. Each year home-going factory workers are besieged with requests to Please remember the grotter', and find themselves having to pick their way carefully along the pavement over structures of stones, shells, and flowers.
Possibly due to the war-time evacuation grottoes have also, in the post-war period, been reported from as far afield as Waterlooville in Hampshire.
** According to an old proverb 'He who eats oysters on St. James's Day will not want money' and on this day Londoners used to gorge themselves with the delicacy. "The children of these gourmands, however,' says Time's Telescope for 1823, 'are contented with the shells, with which they erect grottos, illuminated by an inch of rushlight; and to defray the expenses of this infantine celebration, they do not cease to beg halfpence of the passengers. This fête of the oysters, although it is said to come but once a year, lasts for some weeks, to the great annoyance of those who pedestrianise in the streets of London in the months of August and September? Joseph Blanco White considered that London children, practising the custom, were representatives of some Catholic emblem which had had its day, and in his Letters from Spain (1822) he notes the similarity of their cry It is but once a year, sir' to:

i found the most ludicrous book in artwords bookshop in Hackney today. £35 for a ring bound collection of radfem tumblr posts. i’m not kidding. that’s all it is.
