Recently, Dan came up to me at our mutual friend Lynda Resnick's house (she actually helped him copy the Pentagon Papers on her Xerox machine) and thanked me all over again. He said it was our fifty thousand dollars that enabled them to continue the trial another two weeks... and those two weeks turned out to be crucial.
That was just enough time for the news to break that Dan's psychiatrist's office had been burglarized and Nixon was behind it. The charges against Dan were dismissed on the grounds of government misconduct, and then the Watergate hearings began. And that was the beginning of the end for the president. As we were talking, Dan said that he was one link in the chain of actions that forced Nixon out. Then he looked at me. "And you're part of that chain. What you did was essential."
