“Where did you hear that?” Bright eyes wrinkled in confusion at that sacrifice, before Ata asked, “are you certain of that?”

“Your grace, you’re coddling,” this young knight tapped his staff against her boot in a gentle reminder, “let her play.”

“It’s alright, I’m used to being helped,” she traded a queen and bishop for the same plus a rook. Dainty fingers fidgeted with a loose strand of hair, wrapped around them in pale rings. Then Princess Ceindrych spoke furtively, “Bishop Bainescroft and my loyal wolf speak highly of you, as they could never speak of me.”

“I know. I’m grateful that’s the case,” a low sigh ached within him until he confessed, “it just reminds me of the shipwreck.”

“While Ata reminds you of LLoyd,” at last, those briney eyes opened in a sympathetic gaze which crashed over that younger man. Icy tears ran down Sir Corbyn’s cheeks unbidden, while a tender hand gently rubbed his back, “you cling to the worst interpretation of what happens, but nothing you did was wrong.”

“Melion?”

“Ata, sorry, Princess Ata.” This young man bowed forward, a fist held over his heart, “I’m afraid my name is Marrok now.”

Neither spoke further as shields were raised in front of the princess and a stern hand dragged her back. Marrok was leaner, hair no longer rusted spikes but coils of polished copper. Ata felt a wooden block pressed tight around each wrist, heavy on a neck far frailer then. Drenched by rain, she shivered. Not yet dry despite years of warmth. His eyes lowered, heavy with regret.

Princess Ceindrych had finally stood, “he came to us, a wolf with no name and was given another to make him a man again.”

“You knighted him?” A bear-like rumble echoed in Ata’s chest.

“He’s an ordained paladin.” This diminutive girl held onto Marrok’s elbow and elaborated, “he saved me from a group of bandits and after months of study passed the Chivalric Measure.”

She jolted awake from beneath a blanket, roused by a tone-deaf singer.

After a brief glance toward her plate, the princess raised a tiny fist. It gripped a fork which she admitted was difficult to hold. He gradually corrected this child’s technique until its slender handle balanced along a finger, pinched underthumb. His stern demeanour melted away when Ata cried in delight at her first taste of honey-drizzled crumble.

Tiny legs kicked back and forth with each bite, which Sir Corbyn mimicked as he ate some himself. However, eager to continue those lessons this little girl tugged at the old knight’s sleeve. So they rested peacefully while her master explained how one kingdom became many with their own knightly orders. Yet its oldest had endured for centuries as impartial aids and expert monster hunters, which others struggled to fight. Ata listened intently, so enraptured she barely blinked. Though her engrossment failed to halt that fork’s delivery of crumble.

Sir Garrett accompanied her, though he remained seated in front of their fireplace as Ata unpacked. Buried beneath dresses gifted by Queen Ifon was a stowaway from Sir Corbyn. Golden buttons in place of eyes, black yarn for hair, a red gown which had faded after two years. She fell backwards into that wide bed and hugged Alys against her chest with a faint whimper.

Ata cuddled this doll until night had fallen, then tucked it under the duvet. Sir Corbyn was far away, yet suddenly felt close at hand. When they parted ways, his words were less than kind and hers worse still. Despite that, she wished to see him soon. A knot tightened in Ata’s chest, until Sir Garret tapped on the door. He waited patiently until it crept open, then walked away.

While they waited, Sir Garrett leant forward to ask Ata who that paladin was. At her description, his frown deepened in pity. She tapped a heel against the knight’s boot and admonished him with a smirk.

“None of that. It doesn’t matter now, just bad memories.”

Ata glanced at that lake again. She had never seen such a large body of water in her years on the streets of Dinas Glyndŵr. Ripples spread across its glassy surface where stiff breezes struck. With each step this girl drifted closer, drawn toward a pebble-lined beach by an eerie stillness. Sir Corbyn placed a hand on Ata’s shoulder before she got too close. His gaze skimmed the lake’s surface as he whispered, “never touch it.”

“Isn’t it just a lake?” Dusk-lit eyes carefully searched this flooded valley until they finally found what that old knight searched for. A slender pyramid of black slate topped by a rusted spike was barely visible near the shore furthest from them. Buildings were hidden beneath these waters.

He handed her a flask usually tucked behind his belt, then marched ahead. They walked beside one another as Sir Corbyn told Ata this valley’s history. It happened decades before that fabled calamity struck down the empire which once oppressed them. Despite objections across all of Cambria, their former rulers had flooded a village to create a reservoir none ever drank from. When she handed back that emptied canister, he ended this lesson with a sombre sigh, “it’s not a lake, it's a reminder of what happens when we don’t rule ourselves.”

A loud crack slammed against Sir Corbyn’s ear drum, chased by splinters as wood shattered toward it. That monster had hit harder than a ballista and nearly knocked him down. Yet, when its slender tail withdrew with a snap of dried lumber he hardly reacted. The shotgun was cast aside before Sir Corbyn braced himself yet again, breath held in anticipation.

A vile spear broke through once more, but slid off his helm in a blow fainter than rain. A single step turned this shield to trap the lake hopper. While that beast grumbled in complaint and pulled back weakly, Sir Corbyn drove down one pin with a mighty yell. Then he slammed a foot against his snare, sword drawn skyward where it was set aflame by this sunrise beside them.

The cob snorted fearfully and fought against its reins once they galloped up alongside this enormous bird. Ata held out a hand toward that young boy, who reached back only for them to drift apart. Inch by inch, he was hoisted higher until both children were at eye-level. She desperately cupped her horse’s ears and pleaded with it for a moment of courage.

Ata’s steed responded in a series of terrified squeals, then steered them closer all the same. This little girl murmured against that sable mane in gratitude before she maneuvered into a crouched position one foot at a time. If not for an iron grip on her saddle, any hoofbeat might have thrown Ata. Once they were close enough, the princess pounced upon this monster’s wing.

Wintery light gleamed across opaque windows taller than three men. Cloistered among ancient oaks, their path was adorned in fallen leaves which crunched underfoot. From outside the wall, branches had blinded them from all but that central tower. Within Ata struggled to catch a glimpse, yet she beheld all beneath it clearly. This puzzle of ruddy stone and dark slopes left her awed. Though any grandeur paled as they stepped inside.

A mosaic aisle of harlequin tiles split the cathedral, bordered in jagged gold. On either side were stern pews, harsh to sit upon despite their quality. Pallid stone sprouted around them in a forest of alabaster. Behind such trees, stained glass glowed in each window. Ata halted, for this sight was so similar to her mother’s court. Where she had been adopted years ago.

The next time he appears is in The Wolf Knight, my current project. Set nearly two years after Of Dina & Dan, Sir Garrett has returned as a fully fledged knight. However, he's also been blinded and is using a staff of alder to help himself navigate. Which obviously troubles Ata. Thread.4

She scowled at him then frowned in pity. A blindfold covered Sir Garrett’s eyes to hide a scar splashed across his face. A staff of alder tapped Ata’s boot as that old friend admonished her.

“None of that,” a gloved hand tugged at this verdant strip of cloth before he grumbled, “it doesn’t hurt now, just itches.”

Sir Garrett initially appears as a squire. First in The Knightbane's Prize (1) where he brings Sir Corbyn to speak with Queen Ifon. Garrett is also a minor character in Of Dina & Dan (5) where which he promises to write to Ata while travelling. In neither story is Garrett disabled yet. Thread.3

This young man was almost nineteen. A thin attempt at a beard better left shaven decorated his chin. It had grown in a lighter hue compared to the neat mullet of mousey-blond hair on top. He doubled over breathlessly, then knelt respectfully as Ata clambered down from that old knight. Garrett’s gaze rose once she approached and those dusk-lit eyes met his own. Their hue was the ghost of greenery paled by winter to a dull brown.

“Your grace, my proving begins when we return to Gwynedd. So it will likely be more than a year before I see you again.”

“I hope it goes well,” her head tilted to one side, puzzled.

He smiled slightly then explained, “I wanted to tell you this before I go. It’s made me very happy to see how well you are.”

Let's talk about Steve first. He's a teacher living in Caer y Môn who I describe using a cane to walk around. My own disability was a gradual decline in health and his story is similar, losing mobility over several years. I'd describe him as hypermobile with a very weak knee and hip. Thread.2

Caer y Môn’s school almost stretched from wall to wall. Though its second floor was far shorter. At one end, a slender spire of pale stone housed an extensive library. Inside, rather than a corridor built down the middle it ran alongside each room instead. They passed three before Sir Corbyn introduced Ata to Steve. Dressed in a deep blue robe, he hobbled forward on a cane of charred wood to greet them in a kindly fashion.

This strange man nodded, then shuffled away to ask another that same question. The knight’s gaze followed along with a sad frown. Ata tugged at Sir Corbyn’s sleeve inquisitively once Old Craig had vanished from sight. He suggested for her to ask Sir Myrddin about this instead, once his competition was won.

It took them a moment to find Sir Brent, who waited beside a fence which enclosed each contestant and their targets. Among them were knights of Powys, who wore grey tabards decorated with a red dragon. The Order of Vortigern’s heraldry. A group of town guards outnumbered them three to six. Finally, Sir Myrddin stood alone in a bone-white gambeson coat. That loosely-braided beard was flung over one shoulder, away from his unstrung bow.

All except their grandmaster stepped forward a dozen paces and fired three arrows each. Once they were done, this elderly man threaded heavy limbs of yew so fast even Sir Corbyn struggled to follow him. Sir Myrddin’s darts fell swifter than rain as fletching scratched his cheek. A trio of stems grouped upon the target’s gold, though he committed no care to their aim.

A small crowd was gathered around it and each person walked away with a plate in hand. After a deep breath she opened up her satchel to retrieve Alys. The princess hugged this doll tightly, then approached these townsfolk at an overly cautious pace.

For a brief moment, none dared breathe. Sir Corbyn felt as though a beast had snuck into their periphery, so fearsome its body was the shadow of a terrible forest. Grand enough this elderly man appeared no more than a fang in that phantasmal maw. When Sir Myrddin spoke, his voice growled low enough to remind them all he had lived long in a profession of early graves.

“Tell me why I have not done all you know to fear from me.”

Princess Ata Glyndŵr pulled back a small curtain, to stare wistfully at Brycheiniog’s countryside. Across from her, a young knight chuckled softly when he heard this girl sigh. She scowled at him then frowned in pity. A blindfold covered Sir Garrett’s eyes to hide a scar splashed across his face. A staff of alder tapped Ata’s boot as that old friend admonished her.

“None of that,” a gloved hand tugged at this verdant strip of cloth before he grumbled, “it doesn’t hurt now, just itches.”

Small holes had formed where roots from nearby trees burst through the cement. Atop her horse, Ata peered over that wall at an elderly guard who napped rather than work.
