Even if you live in the residential area just south of the tracks, you can't actually walk to the station because MTA didn't build an overpass/grade crossing Person living in the house 700 ft away would have to drive 10 minutes to get to the Yaphank-BNL station. Would be faster to get to old stop!
The new station is suffixed BNL because it was meant to be closer to the BNL campus, the largest single-site employer on Long Island. But driving/taking a shuttle from the main part of the BNL campus is actually longer to the new station.
If you are coming from points east on the LIE, you have to backtrack a significant distance to get to the new station. It actually takes 2 minutes longer and a tenth of a mile more to get to the new station vs. the old one.
The MTA held a press event at the new Yaphank-BNL station that will open tomorrow to replace the existing Yaphank station by the county center. Probably the most people that will ever be at this station at one time...
PATH has been removing posters about service improvements from train cars to cover up how they reneged on their commitment to improve NWK-WTC service on Friday nights. Bunch of liars!!
People working late have to stand all the way home because @mta.info decides to run 8 car train to Ronkonkoma... Zero effort!
Believe it or not, LIRR's union contracts have a scam like this as well. If a LIRR employee goes on vacation, they don't get paid 40 hours straight time. They get paid 1/52 of their prior year's salary so they get their OT, penalty payments, and other enhancements while not working too...
There are 15 employees standing around here being paid to not deliver service, enough for 5 full train crews (which could allow for off-peak service to be boosted to half-hourly/20 minute headways on several branches, for example)
. @mta.info LIRR implemented these ridiculous fare policy changes that significantly reduce the flexibility of tickets yet are STILL wasting an incredible amount of money having conductors stand at the top of stairs to check tickets (that get checked onboard) instead of running more trains.
MTA still hasn't delivered an OMNY app it once said was coming in "late 2019" They are years late on a digital OMNY card for full fare riders Do we really think this is an achievable milestone? Why is effort being put into this instead of standardizing DOE ID cards and embedding OMNY in that?
First time I recall LIRR utilizing the electric lock switches at Amagansett to have trains pass each other in single track territory. LIRR made a huge mistake not installing any dual control switches east of Southampton... Makes bad situations even worse. This train left Jamaica 7.5+ hours ago!
Yeah, the LIRR's story doesn't add up. Some trains have been able to make it through, so there obviously isn't something fouling the actual tracks. In any event, unacceptable to still have issues 12+ hours after the storm like this.
Service is suspended on the South Fork on the busiest holiday weekend of the year and it has been 2+ hours since the last update from LIRR.
There has to be a better way to manage traffic around Jones Beach than to just close all of the parkways...
Chaos brewing on the Montauk Branch as LIRR has suspended service east of Speonk, as thousands of holiday weekend travelers look to return west. 6001 made it through this morning but with extreme crowding and heavy delays.
NJTransit has stepped up its GTFS game. At stops with multiple boarding locations, the scheduled departure gate/lane is now included in the static schedules. Very handy if you're trying to catch a bus.
LIRR tries to switch riders on 566 to a diesel train at Jamaica before canceling it due to "equipment trouble" All that to boil out on the platforms at Jamaica for an extra half hour 😒
Two more partial cancelations on the diesel branches. We should cut the @mta.info some slack. This was an unscheduled holiday weekend. It just snuck up on them.
The only time you can get a seat on a Friday Cannonball... LIRR now finds the 12-car sets, but everyone is out on the East End already! The next busiest PM Peak train is only 17% full. 💸💸💸
Weekend/holiday schedule has 4 AM trains to Montauk, which are usually built up to 10-12 cars. Two 8-car trains doesn't come close to enough capacity on a major holiday! 2 trains in a row to Port Jeff canceled this eve b/c @mta.info cannot adequately match capacity to demand. Pay those peak fares!!
And, exactly as predicted, the one morning train out to Montauk is completely packed. They had to run a second relief train is also mostly full. Which Oyster Bay or Port Jeff train will be canceled later? We'll see! bsky.app/profile/thel...
It's the height of the AM Peak and the busiest peak train is just 16% full this morning. @mta.info is wasting an incredible amount of money running full weekday service on a holiday. bsky.app/profile/thel...
