What Legal Steps May a Community Take to Keep the Present Situation from Becoming Worse, and to Insure that Future Building Will Not Create Additional Problems?
Zoning is an excellent means to this end. Under provisions of the zoning ordinance, new buildings constructed in the business district may be required to provide off-street parking and loading facilities to take care of the demand they create. In some instances, such ordinances require that existing structures provide off-street parking and loading space within a specified number of years.
Zoning ordinances are in existence providing for off-street parking or loading facilities for single residences, multi-family dwellings, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, theaters, places of public assembly, wholesale and retail stores, office buildings, and industrial buildings. (New York State communities desiring to apply zoning procedures to their parking problems will find the services of the Bureau of Planning of the State Department of Commerce helpful.)
Finally, building permits for structures requiring off-street loading and parking spaces may be denied unless these facilities are included in the plans. See Figure 4-X.

Read an article about Waymo passing school buses in Austin. First, I agree with Dr. Missy Cummings, waymo should stop operating around schools during pick-up drop-off until they prove it’s fixed. Second, half way into the article it turns out that it’s probably a human’s fault…

A preliminary report by the NTSB published in early March found that one ensuing incident, on January 12, occurred after a Waymo remote assistant, a Michigan-based human tasked with
"helping" the software when it was struggling on the road, incorrectly told the robotaxi that the school bus ahead of it didn't have active signals on. Six vehicles passed the school bus while it was stopped, the agency said. It is still investigating.

This email from Councilor Olivia Clark (is she on here or is it too liberal?) pissed me off. The pivot from “sorry ICE assaulted you all” to thanking the police who shamefully stood by and did nothing is clumsy and jarring. It’s like she had to balance a cop critique with a cop complement. 🤮

By the way, I want to say how pleased I am that the Portland Police Bureau was able to track down the suspect connected to the shooting of two officers on January 19 and haul him in. They even secured the gun that was used. It is a great relief to all of us.

C’mon man. Humans drive into flood water all the time!

On the other hand, self-driven cars make mistakes that humans would not, such as plowing into flood water or driving through an active crime scene where police have their guns drawn. During a major power outage in San Francisco on Dec. 20, many Waymos froze in place, jamming major intersections across the city when traffic lights went dark.
