But today he was a little more tired and sad in his heart. Today was forty-five probably. Three years ago, when he turned forty-three probably, he had had a much different birthday with his mormor. She wasn’t his real mormor, she’d always said. She never had any children but the ones she picked up on the side of the road that no one else wanted. But he hadn’t managed to die yet, she’d said, so it was good enough.
When the Swede had turned forty-three, probably, they had an inn room because it was cold and an April snow had coated the roads. The wagon couldn’t move and her old bones couldn’t take it, she had said.
The morning of his birthday she had poked him with her stick until he woke up and sang ja, må han in her beautiful voice, then had Beatrice sing it in her creepy wood voice because of her creepy wood throat and a big blue staring glass eye that mormor had stolen when he was very young off a dead man who they had found frozen stiff in an oak forest.
After the lovely horrible song had ended, Mormor had sat on the edge of the bed with her knees creaking and had sat Beatrice on her lap with the wooden joints creaking and said:
‘Harken, myling, and Beatrice will tell you the story of how you were shoved into this sorry world…’

Of course before potato peeling, the Swede had to haul lines and climb the rigging and furl sails and eat food. Then there was a good hour spent of fending off the horde of Big Mick who was not so big, but his crew were fairly large in all kinds of ways. The Swede’s arms were very tired of bludgeoning and stabbing and his feet hurt from running for his life. They had managed to run away and only lost six or so guys in the process, which was a win. But even though things on the Ræv had calmed down, potatoes still needed to be peeled.

And there were a lot of them.

But he didn’t mind peeling potatoes or polishing cannon balls or any of the other tasks an annoyed Quartermaster Holmström set him to do. These were supposed to be bad, but it was soothing to stay in the dark of the hold and peel. He could hum or sing to himself or tell himself stories or nap if he thought he could get away with it.

And today was even better, because the only thing he liked more than small work was small work with other people that were not Fritjolf and his mates. Even better than that, aside from the Chicken Man who got small work almost every other day, there was a new guy from Big Mick’s crew that they’d accidentally taken with them when he’d got knocked cold.
