I will never (well, okay, rarely) miss an opportunity to promote the heck out of this one. It's the best picture book I've ever had a hand in (and I've been doing this for 22 years).

I don't remember the creative process, but I do remember my Grade One teacher reading this one aloud. The kids laughed/gasped in all the right places. Captain Otter was courageous, but also willing to cut his losses. I later wrote a picture book inspired by this and launched it at my old school.

My agent submitted HAT CAT something like 13 times. I submitted STILL FRIENDS only once. There is no magic number. Not for submissions, not for revisions, not for anything. The answer is always "As many as it takes".

I want kids to see my latest (and 10th) picture book, STILL FRIENDS, and shout "Troy Wilson", rather than shouting "Troy Wilson" after seeing actual, physical me. STILL FRIENDS is my best self. (And by 'my', I mean my + Mike Deas + @orcabook.bsky.social.) Accept no substitutes, kiddos!

I'm embarrassed for them, too, Robin. Sure, my sexuality is super-beige, BUT... ,,,I grew up as an artsy guy in a mill town full of tradespeople. If I'd stayed "beige" to fit in, I wouldn't have 10 picture books and 18 stories in kids' magazines published. Plus, my parents are my biggest fans.

Oh look, it's the Indonesian-language ebook edition of THE DUCK SAYS by me and @mikeboldt.bsky.social.

Loving what I love hasn't just been the key to enjoying art; it's been the key to creating it. I loved some rhymes about a duck. And those rhymes became a Scholastic picture book that has been translated into French and Indonesian (even though rhyming stuff is much less likely to be translated).

60 Minutes began in 1968. I began in 1970. We came of age together, and I have always understood its value, importance, and integrity. The people who have killed 60 Minutes can go fuck themselves. Hard and forever.

My parents didn't read aloud to me. And my schools didn't host any author visits. But my elementary school did have a great school librarian. I still remember her reading the exact same passage of The Secret World of Og that I much later heard the author read at a bookstore. They both crushed it.
