Strange fiction, weird history. Lost member of the PRB. Marfan syndrome. Will-o’-the-wisp. Victorians, folklore, bad medicine. THE OTHERS OF EDENWELL and CHEER THE SICK out now. Non-fiction in @helleborezine.bsky.social. 🦇🖋️🇬🇮
This was the picture on the cover, so I used to joke that someone found it distasteful.
Those who've read my collection Cheer The Sick will know @hookland.bsky.social has been part of my imaginary landscape for a long time. When I teach writing, I always bring up Hookland as a prime example of balancing intricate worldbuilding with living storytelling. It's real on every level.
It's my partner's turn to have heat exhaustion today, so I'm on cold drink duty and laying out my material to finish this quilted picnic blanket. Turns out oilcloth is a difficult beast. But I will tame her.
It doesn't help this guy's case that he looks a lot like Bob Mortimer.
Sewing adventures continue. I'm making a simple A-line sleeveless top next, in this adorable fabric. I do love a jaunty bug.
Watching the wolfies charge about in a woodland stream was absolutely magical. We learned so much from Natalie and Adam - their sanctuary is so worth a visit! www.watermillwolves.co.uk
This is Toothless, an American wolf with black fur. He and his sister Eclipse are the most wild of the wolves at the sanctuary, very shy and elegant. When he saw us strangers, Toothless gave a suspicious little "Boof!"
Griffon was rescued from a hoarding situation. His girlfriend's name is sunshine.
This is Doctor Jones, who you've probably seen on TV 'attacking' people. He is an excellent actor and a huge baby. The wolves you've seen on Penny Dreadful, Vikings etc, come from Watermill Wolves.
Biggles, Mr Bond, and Princess, the 'ambassador wolves'. Impeccable manners, except when Princess spies an unattended spatula.
So we spent an evening at Watermill Wolves in Bexhill where we met these perfect angels. We fed them, walked them through a private forest, watched them show off their acting skills, and even had a barbecue while they snuffled at our feet. This is Mr Bond, who I love with all my heart.
Popped in to Waterstones Hastings and signed The Others of Edenwell. 🐦⬛
Hello, today I walked an actual wolf through a forest strung with fairy lights, and now I know what Heaven will be like. More on this when I’m less incoherent with joy.
I made a little shrug/jackety thing! It needs neatening up, but it's wearable. I've never made anything from a pattern on my own before, so I'm quite pleased. And the swamp witch fabric is fun.
This one delights me, because that's Heathrow. I've stayed there. That's just what Heathrow is like. You're going to Corfu tomorrow, there's a pub down in the foyer, calm down.
It's Brando's gotcha day! First picture is him the day we got him; very thin, very befuddled. Terrified of doors, stairs, sudden movements, and most other things. Second pic is him today, blissfully conked out on a pillow, spoiled rotten. My weird little guy.
I just need to praise the museum's incredibly Hogarthian mannequin display of a litter containing one pervert carried by two distinctly criminal men who hate their job.
Hilariously, I spotted my Uncle Geoff in the London Transport Museum. He's the one in the middle. He shared a flat with the artist and offered to model when he was on a deadline. (No, he wasn't a ticket inspector.)
"You can't sit with us." Oh wow, an early 19th century omnibus. Oh gosh, oh wow. So much velvet. I would die of motion sickness.
Me: I don't know, I have autistic traits, but I'm not sure that warrants diagnosis... Also me: This antique train is so beautiful I want to cry
TADA! I completed my first quilt. Come and see my process and read about subversive fabric arts from history. www.patreon.com/posts/quilte...
These Tim Holtz fabrics are divine. You could trap me under a cardboard box if you put a roll of this stuff out as bait.
The back is an enormous collage of lovely handwriting. I'm going to do a lilac binding to pick out the purples in the front side.
She is quilted! Still need to do the binding, but I'm just amazed I've got this far. It's so soft and crinkly. I already want to hibernate inside it.
