Unlike the other recent drawings of Jupiter at different times, this study was done to try and replicate a specific reference as closely and accurately as possible in an attempt to improve my skills. I'm very proud of the result. Based on www.planetary.org/space-images... processed by Björn Jónsson
DIGITAL PAINTING of #Jupiter, as seen by the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft on 2000 November 30 as it was flying by the planet to get a gravitational 'slingshot' towards its destination, Saturn. #Cassini #Space #SpaceArt #DigitalArt #Planet #PlanetArt #GasGiant #Photorealistic
Compare my painting with a photo of Jupiter from 2010, when the South Equatorial Belt mysteriously disappeared as it seems to have done in Cassini's sketch. I also wanted to differentiate the Permanent Spot from the Great Red Spot. No one described a spot on Jupiter as red until the 19th century...
#DigitalPainting of #Jupiter, as it would have appeared on 1672 January 19th at 4:45 AM, based on a sketch by Giovanni #Cassini Cassini is usually seen as the discoverer of the Great Red Spot, but modern analyses suggest his Permanent Spot is a different storm and GRS appeared in the 19th century.
see also my updated version of Trouvelot's Jupiter, using a sketch by E.E. Barnard to adjust the details and proportions. (google translate) Voir aussi ma version actualisée du Jupiter de Trouvelot, réalisée à partir d'un croquis d'E.E. Barnard pour ajuster les détails et les proportions.
A set of six photographs were taken over the span of perhaps 40 minutes with color filters to bring out different details at different cloud depths--Ultraviolet, Violet, Green, Yellow, Red, and Infrared. I experimented with various color photographs based upon these, which I used for reference.

Jellyfish Galaxy When a lone galaxy passes through a galaxy cluster, it compresses the intergalactic gas and dust surrounding the cluster, generating a burst of star formation trailing behind the galaxy in tentacle-like columns. This depicts the view from one of these starburst trails. #SpaceArt
Slowly Rotating Gas Giant. This gas giant planet rotates only once every few months, and it orbits far from its star, so its weather patterns take the form of large convection cells driven by the internal heat left over from formation. #GasGiant #Space #Planet #SpaceArt #PlanetArt #Convection
#SpaceArt #Space #Art #Hycean #Superearth #Exoplanet #SciFiArt #SciFi Two twin super-earth-mass #Hycean planets--that is, Ocean planets with Hydrogen atmospheres. In the foreground is TE-346 c, a tidally locked planet w/ a chlorinated atmosphere. Behind is TE-346 d, a rapid rotator with rings.

Digital painting of #Jupiter, as it appeared from Earth on 1880 November 1st at 9:00 EST. Based on an illustration by Étienne Trouvelot published in 1882. #1880s #planet #space #GasGiant #GiantPlanet #GreatRedSpot #GRS #Trouvelot #SpaceArt #SciArt
I interpret the dark equatorial zone in Common's photo as a result of the blue-violet bias of early film, which implies an orange equatorial zone as shown by this monstrosity of a hybrid between the two photos (the Lick photo was taken with a yellow filter)
These photos and sketches from the 19th century were used as reference: A.A. Common's Sept 1879 photo, Lick Observatory's Oct 1890 photo, Trouvelot's Nov 1880 drawing, and Elger's Nov 1881 sketch.
Variants! Voyager color pallet, zoomed out view, 4:3 view with no shadow, and faux black & white photograph version.
