So initially 2 books exploring thoughts/experiences I’d been having living in this world as a queer Black man, 1 very adult and 1 not. But again, Ax is too much on his own, so maybe I save him for later? And then… During the Lunar New Year celebrating the black rabbit, this guy hops into my life.
While Ax was easy to jump into because of the almost one-dimensional severity of his experiences, the other story has been a slower burn to figure out and develop. The idea was to have a character through which I could explore my thoughts on sex and curiosity in possibly doing sex work.
The ideas in Mesmer originally started out as 2 different books. The first was Anxious Ax, following a guy with an anxiety monster dictating his life. But as I worked on the first story, it became apparent that sustaining anxiety for a whole book would be torturous as a creator and for readers.
I’ve been working on Mesmer for a couple years now, between editing & creating stories for other comics. Now that I’m actually Kickstarting it, and on the verge of being able to give it my full attention, all these thoughts of the process so far are flooding back to me.
It delights me to no end that @dogspunk.bsky.social gives me art (and tattoos) inspired by some of my favs for birthdays. Today he gifted me this great Night of the Living Dead piece. Including some older favs here as well. Not pictured is the birthday card inspired by Kuroneko! Thank you, doggie
It’s gonna be stacked Friday at SDCC for me. These two panels plus the Eisners! 🤞🏾 Come thru!
Debuting some new queer characters in my Screen Icon series at Q Con this weekend. Come get some.
I lied, its too hot to be letting my hair grow out again right now. It got the chop again.
Did this drawing a couple of years ago for @dogspunk.bsky.social‘s Sadako zine. Saddened to hear of the passing of Daveigh Chase who made quite the impact as a child star as Samara in The Ring, and other movies including Lilo & Stitch, Spirited Away, and Donnie Darko.
Happy Birthday to my true Man Crush Monday @dogspunk.bsky.social !!! Come see us at Q Con this weekend to give him belated birthday wishes in person.
Wrapping up other projects so that I can get back to this one! 😗
Looks like I’m back to doing Man Crush Mondays again. Here is LaKeith Stanfield’s romantic character from the recent I Love Boosters which I implore everyone to see in theaters if you haven’t already. It’s a wild romp.
It’s mermay so I should probably post about my boy Cyrano more this month…..
Just realized I never shared this pic here, from when we saw Dead Lover in Stink-O-Vision at The Frida. very stinky
We need MAJOR change. Here’s what my boys would be doing if they were here.
“Is that a coconut water in your pocket or are you happy to see me?”
