No big shock, but July is coming in hot for almost the entire country save for California. Things won't cool off anytime soon for most of us--only the Northeast and a small portion of the southern Plains are in for cooler-than-normal temperatures into next week.

Tuesday looks like a significant severe weather day for parts of New England. Severe storms over Ontario/Quebec will cross the border during the afternoon and evening hours. Widespread damaging winds are expected. Some storms may be capable of very large hail (golf ball size) and a few tornadoes.

Given the ridging expected into next week, we might be in contention for one of the hottest months on record. August 2007 was in the middle of that epic southeastern drought. GSO hit 95°F+ 14 times and only picked up 1.36 inches of rain the whole month.
Our average temperature over the past six days is a whopping 85.7°F, which is our warmest start to July on record by more than 3 degrees. I check Greensboro to make sure Reidsville's obs weren't suspect, and it's almost identical. Hot stuff.

Looks like the very center of Bavi's eye missed true landfall by just a few miles. Only a technicality at this point as far as Rota is concerned.
The clear eye of Super Typhoon Bavi is starting to cross Rota now. It'll be close if the center of the eye makes landfall or not. Regardless, they just went through hell--and there's more on the way.
If anyone ever wonders the use in debunking weather myths, here's a conversation on NWS Guam's Facebook page as a Category 5 typhoon bears down. (You don't need to "equalize the pressure" in your home during a hurricane or tornado. The wind does the damage. Pressure differences do not.)
An extreme wind warning is in effect for Rota as the eye of Super Typhoon Bavi prepares to track directly over the tiny island. Winds at the airport in Guam are gusting to 75 mph right now.

Bavi is now a super typhoon, the equivalent of a Category 5 with 160 mph winds. The storm will lash the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday morning local time (Sunday afternoon for us in Eastern Time). Even without landfall, damaging winds, flooding rain, and storm surge are likely.
