Playing history. Filmmaker and Designer of “Chicago ‘68” and “The Nights of King Ludd”
Played @peersylvester.bsky.social’s wonderful “Wir Sind Das Volk!” earlier this week. I really dig the COIN card market and the tempo considerations it evokes. Of course, East won as the socialists co-opt mass protests and held on until the 90s (& counter history, never built the wall). #boardgames
Next month is the 58th anniversary of the DNC riots. We’re planning a special Chicago ‘68 game event with our friends at Marz brewing on August 28. Stay tuned!
Today we announce our next board game, "The Nights of King Ludd: The Luddite War on Industry 1811-?" A collaborative game of industrial sabotage ⚒️ 🔥 on Kickstarter September 2: www.kickstarter.com/projects/die... @joedewhurst.bsky.social @thedietzfoundation.bsky.social @ronengoldstein.bsky.social
Played two fantastic games about spying, smuggling, and racketeering: @dnlnwmn.bsky.social ‘s Watch & @colewehrle.bsky.social ‘s Pax Pamir 2ed. #boardgames
Please consider nominating Chicago ‘68 for this year’s @sdhistcon.bsky.social Summit Award ✊
Teach & Play of Chicago ‘68 with @catastrophegames.bsky.social and the good people of Riverwalk Games in Michigan. The loser was punished with a shot of Malört, Chicago’s tear gas in a bottle. #boardgames #malort
I was at inaugural SDHistCon North! We played Baltic Empires, Pacts, Infamous Traffic 2nd edition, Charioteer, and Bowie Remastered. I also run a game of Nights of King Ludd (prototype) and Chicago ‘68. Good times!
We’re play testing The Nights of King Ludd at @sdhistcon.bsky.social! #boardgames
Packing for @sdhistcon.bsky.social with my business partner. #historical #boardgames #businesscat
We played The Glasgow Train Robbery last night (by @saltandpeppergames.bsky.social), getting close but still not managing to pull off that heist! #boardgames
Played my first game of Burning Banners designed and illustrated by Christopher Moeller. It’s a highly modular, somewhat messy but generous game loaded with narrative details and dramatic turns. #boardgames #fantasy
We played Stephen Rangazas & @joedewhurst.bsky.social’s the Guerrilla Generation: Uruguay by @gmtgames.bsky.social last night. I played the state power this time. The Tupamaro cells were tough as hell to keep up with … until the Military stepped in and wiped them off the map.
This morning @joedewhurst.bsky.social, @ronengoldstein.bsky.social, and I had the honor of accepting the Premio Comenio prize for historical games from the Board Game Research Meeting in Genoa. The award recognizes Chicago ‘68 as a game that “makes history accessible, engaging, and meaningful.”
Played a memorial day game of Root: Homeland by @leder.games. This group hasn’t played for at least a year or more, so it took some time to re-familiarize everyone with the core rules on top of the new factions. Still, a close game.. that is until the Bats (a sort of League of Nations) let loose 🦇
Played some more Root: Homeland, Shadow Moon Syndicates, and play tested Nights of King Ludd. Got some Earthborne Rangers on the horizon and hopefully a go at Guerrilla Generation soon. Feeling that itch for more historical games … (but maybe that will have to wait until SDHIST North)
Played a fun game of Shadow Moon Syndicates by @3mbg.bsky.social. Overcommitted myself and went from a solid lead in rounds 1 & 2 to an abysmal last place in the final showdown.
In non-demonic board game news, I'm proud to announce that CHICAGO '68 is nominated for a Storia Ludica Premio Comenio award "an international recognition dedicated to games that explore historical themes through the language of play." Presented in Genoa at the Boardgame Research Meeting next month.
Play testing The Nights of King Ludd in golden hour is a vibe. This game saw a barroom republican establish a First Congress, a massive arrest and deportation of Luddites to Australia, and a daring assassination of a local manufacturer.
We’re deep into play testing the Nights of King Ludd these days, but I’ve been sneaking in a couple games of the new Homeland expansion for Root and another day of adventuring with Earthborne Rangers.
Undoubtedly the first time anyone has ever referred to Lord Byron as a “Giga Chad”
In-person play testing of “The Nights of King Ludd” marches on! At play were Lord Byron advocating for the Luddites in parliament; the assassin and “General Ludd’s right hand man”, George Mellor; and the teenage arsonists, Mary and Lydia Molyneux. ⚒️ #boardgames #gamedesign
Slicing up a prototype of "The Nights of King Ludd" for unguided play testing this week (and humming this little song). #boardgame #design
