Bonkers statistic noted by @rcfp.org's Bruce Brown in tonight's edition of @status.news: In 25 years, feds tried to used "national security" to expose reporter sources on 3 occasions. In the last few months, Trump admin has already tried it at least 4 times. This is pure authoritarian playbook.

• The NYT revealed that one of its freelance reporters, Matthew Cole, has been fighting a subpoena from Donald Trump’s Justice Department since February, as part of the administration’s effort to force him to reveal his sources for a story about a failed secret mission in North Korea. [NYT]

• In response, Reporters Committee President Bruce D. Brown noted that over the last 25 years, “There have only been three attempts in national security leaks cases to force reporters to name their sources.” Now, he added, “We have four attempts—that we know of—in the space of a few months.”

The World Cup isn't going to fix anything, but it is a great reminder: Most immigrants are good, most Americans are good, and that goodness is what makes the future of this country worth fighting for.

Trump’s xenophobia is part of America, but so, too, is the impulse to welcome people from the rest of the world. That’s the soft power tool that has helped generations of immigrants make a home in the US, and it is part of why America has been such a dominant world force for so long.
Trump’s destructive policies have endangered a lot of the cultural exports that make America attractive to the rest of the world, but it’s worth remembering that the appeal of the US isn’t just our movies and our university system. It’s also the people who live here who want to be good hosts and good neighbors to the rest of the world — and Trump can’t get rid of those people, or these shared values, with the stroke of a pen.

BREAKING: Judge grants class certification in Los Angeles Press Club case against DHS (inc. ICE, Border Patrol and FPS). This extends protections for recording/photographing beyond just named plaintiffs (like LAPC members). Feds were effectively hoping to exclude other obvious journalists.

Last summer, the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”)1 began a campaign of
aggressive immigration enforcement in this District. The community protested, and journalists and
regular citizens alike began documenting what unfolded throughout Southern California. This
putative class action arises out of federal agents’ violent response to those demonstrations, and what
happened when those matters of public importance were recorded. The operative complaint states
claims for violations of the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments and the Administrative Procedure
Act (“APA”). First Amended Complaint (“FAC”) [Dkt. 67] ¶¶ 275–306.
Plaintiffs’ Motion to Certify Class (“Motion”) [Dkt. 100] asks the Court to certify a class
comprising “[a]ll people who do or will, without using force or threat of force, record [or
photograph] DHS immigration enforcement and removal operations or protests of those operations
in this District since June 6, 2025.”

Press and demonstrators face various "less lethal" weapons used by police at protests. But whatever weapon they use, the sheer volume of rounds shot into crowds is disconcerting. LAPD fired over 1,000 in a single day. Combined, LAPD and LASD shot over 10,000 over a few weeks.

can be raised and remedy can be sought.
Targeted actions to this end may focus on:
-Ensuring that grievance mechanisms and remediation processes are traumainformed, linguistically accessible, accessible for persons with disabilities, and
accessible to groups or populations that may be at a heightened risk of being
adversely impacted;
-Enhanced protections for migrant worker records against potential threats of
retaliation, including threats of deportation and blacklisting, when using
grievance mechanisms (State or non-State-based);
-Anonymity, non-retaliation, and safeguarding measures for complainants;
-Ensuring that human rights defenders, journalists, and other media workers or
persons in human rights roles (e.g. human rights volunteers) are aware of the

Los Angeles has reputation as most degenerate place in America for press rights. FIFA required LA World Cup host committee to write a human rights action plan. It was supposed to include press. No surprise, LA completely blew that part off. LA's seen DECADES of police violence toward press.

For its part, FIFA issued guidelines on First Amendment protections and required World Cup host cities, 11 of which are in the U.S., to submit human rights action plans.

But one host city, Los Angeles, doesn’t even mention journalists in its related webpage, despite LA accounting for half of all press freedom violations documented in the Tracker this year. And Atlanta’s 57-page plan references journalists only once, even though two of the seven reporters documented in the Tracker’s ICE detention cases were detained in the state. As of late April, most cities still had not published their plans.

Last-place CBS Evening News has been embarrassed they couldn't crack 4 million average weekly viewers for 6 weeks. A few days ago, they announced they finally climbed back. Only problem? They didn't. Scoop in @status.news explains slimy PR trick (they point out other networks have done similar):

But a closer look at the numbers tells a different story. According to Nielsen data obtained by Status, Dokoupil actually averaged 3.985 million viewers during the five-day period ending Friday, May 22—just below the 4 million mark. In other words, the streak wasn’t broken at all. So how did CBS get him over the line? By employing a too-often-abused ratings maneuver. The network coded Friday’s broadcast, typically the week’s lowest-rated edition, as “CBS-EVENING-NWS” instead of “CBS-EVENING-NEWS.” That omission of the letter “e” excluded Friday’s audience from the program’s weekly average, allowing CBS News to report a figure above 4 million viewers.

At almost every protest I’ve covered this year, I’ve either been shot with “less-lethals” by police, detained or threatened with arrest.

It’s gotten to the point where family members have practically begged me to stop covering protests.

LAPD just doubled the fee for a press pass. Actually seems to be up 3.2x since just a couple years ago. 2010 = $16 2015 = $28 2016 = $30 (proposed, unsure if adopted) 2023 = $45 2025 = $73 (increased 7 months ago!) 2026 = $144 Importantly: LAPD press passes are NOT required in LA.

Amendment to LAPD Media Card (Press Pass) Fee

Effective May 4, 2026

The Los Angeles Police Department announces an amendment to the fee associated with LAPD-issued Media Cards (Press Passes) pursuant to Ordinance No. 188897, which amended Section 52.16, Subsection H of the Los Angeles Municipal Code.

Effective May 4, 2026, the fee for the initial issuance of an LAPD Media Card (Press Pass) will increase to $144.00. In addition, no fee will be charged for the reissuance of a media card, including replacement cards issued due to loss, damage, or renewal.

The updated fee structure applies to all new media card applications submitted on or after May 4, 2026. Existing media card holders requesting reissuance after the effective date will not be charged a replacement fee.

The exclusive purpose of LAPD press passes shall be to enable the bearer to pass through established police and or fire lines within the City of Los Angeles in order to cover news events occurring behind such lines.

CPJ welcomes the news that journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has been acquitted. Full
details are still being ascertained but his international legal team confirms that he has
