Making anime, video game and other crossover MtG proxy cards.
If I remember correctly, it was a mail-in promo that came with Nintendo Power magazine.
The pixel card frame was made for the TMNT UB, but I thought it would also look great for any classic pixel art video games. So I made this MtG proxy of Starting Town from Final Fantasy I, complete with little light warriors standing on the card frame.
The Dark Armor from Metroid Prime 2 sounds like a perfect fit for a MtG proxy card of Darksteel Plate.
A fountain (waterfall) in the Halo video game. It's a Halo fountain! Should I make some more MtG proxy cards that are "Halo" puns?
An idea I had for an X-Men custom card. I wanted to play on the joke that there are quite a few MtG creature types that share the same name as many of the X-Men. The second effect is very close to Crystalline Giant, but I promise I came up with the design independently.
Morphic Pool? No, Morpha's pool! The boss of the Water Temple in Zelda Ocarina of Time controls the movements of the liquid in this room. The most disliked water dungeon felt like a great fit for a MtG proxy of a blue and black land.
The suit upgrades in Metroid always feel so good when they enhance your movement abilities. The gravity suit with its purple color theme felt like a great fit for a MtG proxy of Commander's Plate, which grants protection from colors.
If you don't reset time on the third day of Zelda Majora's Mask, the moon crashes into the earth. Feels like Ruinous Ultimatum may best represent destroying the world, so I decided to make a MtG proxy of the iconic moon fall bad ending of the game.
Skull Kid from Zelda Majora's Mask uses his powers to accelerate the moon's fall towards Termina. I thought this was a good fit for an MtG proxy of Decree of Annihilation because even if you only cycle the card, it's instant-speed land destruction that's difficult to counter.
Today is preorder day for the Hatsune Miku Secret Lair! Here are a few MtG proxy cards I've made of Miku.
Perforator Crocodile is getting printed as a physical card in the Mystery Booster Commander Edition, so more people may need the card Stab Wound. Therefore I decided to make an MtG proxy of Ganondorf from Twilight Princess skewered by the sages' sword.
Today is Metroid's 40th anniversary! What is your favorite game in the series? I thought this Chozo statue from Metroid Prime would make for a great MtG proxy card of Roaming Throne, complete with a CRT filter to recall the days of playing on my GameCube.
Ekthi from Mystery Booster Commander Edition is perhaps the commander from that set I'm most interested in because I've always thought living weapon was such a cool mechanic. What Equipment are crazy strong with living weapon? Here's a few that I thought of:
In Hollow Knight, Troupe Master Grimm has a lot of similarities to Dracula from Castlevania. So I felt inspired to make a MtG proxy card of him as the elder vampire Edgar Markov from Innistrad.
I saw the art for Meatsqueak holding an eyeball and I remembered this original art for squirrel nest from Odyssey. I'm very confident Meatsqueak is the same squirrel! 🐿️👁️
Uugguu is one of the new commanders in Mystery Booster Commander Edition and to me this ooze looks like a big jell-o mold on the official art, which reminded me of this food from sidequest in Hollow Knight Silksong. So I felt inspired to make an MtG proxy card.
I had always thought from the original art that Grakk was a zombie. I mean... doesn't his face in the Robert Bliss pacifism art look like the skull doesn't have any flesh or skin on it?
Frieren can't resist checking every chest for treasure and artifacts, leading her to get frequently caught by mimics. This felt like a great theme for a MtG proxy card of Smothering Tithe and of course, I'm going to use my DnD module template.
What if instead of UB sets introducing new creature types that are unique to that IP and could never be integrated into "universes within" sets, how would you feel if these creatures were assigned the most thematically fitting creature type that already exists within Magic?
An MtG proxy from Hollow Knight, the last encounter with Troupe Master Grimm seemingly in the grips of his own bad dream. My recurring nightmare is being unable to defeat Nightmare King Grimm after over 5 years of attempts.
An MtG proxy from Hollow Knight Silksong as Phantom plays music on a giant organ, venting the exhaust air.
The design inspiration for this MtG proxy is in Hollow Knight Silksong you need to sacrifice the three old hearts in order for Hornet to enter the Red Memory. These three sacrifices are a perfect parallel for the effect of Portal to Phyrexia.
We know that MtG Nauctis is fully underwater and therefore won't have flying. So it's going to have a new evasion ability. What do you think it could be? Here's an idea I had for an evasion ability that's all about being fast and difficult to intercept an attacker.
With all of the spidermen and ant-men in MtG Marvel UB, I'm finding inspiration to make some Hollow Knight Silksong proxy cards. Here's Karmelita performing for her ant army.
Here's a Through the Omenpaths version of The Mind Stone using the "Terminus" terminology that was on The Soul Stone in MtG Arena. I really like using David Martin's art for Skycloud Egg on this proxy, which is just an epic-looking artifact on a terrible card.
Frieren rediscovers Himmel's favorite flower, the blue moon weed. I'm enjoying remaking some of my old MtG proxy cards in the DnD Module style, which fits really well with anime that has fantasy vibes.
The goofy character Tingle was introduced in Zelda Majora's Mask when CRT TVs were the norm. He floats on a balloon, so I thought he was a great candidate for an MtG proxy card of The Jolly Balloon Man--no need to even change the card's name to Tingle.
