Was in active fire territory earlier. One of the three fires in Spokane County is burning nearly 4k acres and swept through trails in Riverside State Park.
The devastation is unimaginable. I moved here 3 years ago knowing Spokane would be my home. I can’t explain how horrific this is. “It’s like a war zone,” people told me.
The front page of this morning’s Spokesman-Review, Aug. 2, 2026, the day after one of the worst wildfires in Washington state history. More than 600 structures, mostly homes, have been lost in the #OldTrailsFire. Read local news.
The knee pain I have after hiking today is nothing short of an 86-year-old man, not a 27-year-old woman, I am ~struggling~
Spent some good ol North Idaho wilderness time this weekend. Good for my soulllll
Good afternoon…. If you hate the influencer rigamaroo… Run to your nearest bookstore.
eating a whole rotisserie at work right now like whatever
Ok. Well, this is my third book I’ve finished in less than 2 days. This story did character POV weaving sooo well, and honestly my heart sank into my butt at the end. 10/10. I have to stop, though. I’m going through an insane book reading phase this weekend. It’s an addiction now.
Oh, also I went to work in a Luigi costume for no reason other than it was my birthday Wednesday and I felt like I could do that.
The Spokesman-Review photojournalists are incredible. What else can you really say, wow.
Today was a really tough start to wildfire season. We had near 4 wildfires erupt in the INW within the same 3 hours. I watched homes burn in Spokane County today. I am thinking of those people and the firefighters who stood there to do what they could. Here are some cell phone photos.
Not going to lie, I did cry at Scott Pelley’s line in this NYT interview on his firing: “There is no democracy without journalism. It can’t be done. And that is why I am a journalist.”
Meet our new interns, Julia Pentasuglio, who went to school in Chicago, and and Megan Howard, who went to school in Florida. They are both so fun and awesome and I’m happy they’re here at the Spokesman with us! Keep an eye out for their stuff later this summer.
Listening to @leahsottile.bsky.social & @ryanjhaas.bsky.social analysis on the Spokane 3 trial and its weird road back to Bundy because the 3 were charged under the same code of some of the defendants in the Malheur standoff. I told Leah “all roads lead back to Bundy.” 👀 Sounds right.
My colleagues and I nabbed first place in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Northwest Excellence in Journalism awards for our breaking news coverage on the tragic killings of two Coeur d’Alene firefighters last summer. A day that won’t be forgotten. Grateful for this team
Here is the official statement on the verdict of the “Spokane 3” from the USAO of Eastern Washington. “The jury has rendered its verdict, let us all respect it.”
Does any other journalist do this for DOBs or is it just me 🙃
Just got this absolutely beautiful scam text. I almost would’ve fallen for it had the case number been normal. Oh, and the fact that Idaho doesn’t have a “St. Louis County.”
It’s just me and my 3lb jar of pepperoncinis against the world
Had the best time in CA. Now I’m back to reality. 😝
BOISE: This is my friend John Webb. He will be leaving Spokane to report/anchor in Boise. He is a kind, trustworthy human who did honest work during the Moscow homicides and truly cares about Idaho. Boise, please welcome him when he arrives later this month. I will miss him so much. ❤️
My boyfriend doesn’t have Blue Sky so this is a safe space. I made him this dumb newspaper collage of the Zags for V Day. But he freelances Zag bball for the AP and is a Zag alum, so please tell me I didn’t miss the mark here. I just need a frame. 😬‼️
A 10-year-old and her father detained by Border Patrol and sent to a Texas immigration center flew back into Spokane last night. They were freed following a federal habeas petition that DHS never responded to. Here are the photos I took of that Some had asked for photo privacy during this reunion
