We visited pubs across the country, from the desi pubs of the West Midlands to a Rochdale Wetherspoons with pitstops at rural pubs and many more. It includes a family story taking us from my Great-Granddad's pub in Tanzania to my Dad's pub in Southall and back to the Midlands via the Punjab.
Pubs for the People by me & Vallu is out with @manchesterup.bsky.social in October. On how the pub can be salvaged as a space for the Good Life that goes beyond boring ideas of White England. A bargain at £18.99 in hardback (cant even get 3 pints for that!) www.waterstones.com/book/pubs-fo...
New open-access paper for @youthstudies.bsky.social from my @leverhulme.ac.uk lme.ac.uk project It explores how place influences working-class young people's transitions out of education in London, Rochdale & Morecambe www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... @tcru-ucl.bsky.social @sriucl.bsky.social
Some old photos of Glassy Junction from the 1990s, including a snap featuring Saeed Jaffrey pouring a pint
Will be presenting a broad-brush paper based on my current book project for @princetonupress.bsky.social at the @britsoci.bsky.social conf in Manchester next Thursday at 1.30pm, if anyone is about The book is based on 62 interviews with working-class young people in London, Rochdale & Morecambe
A provocation for sixth formers in Rochdale today for a session on 'culture', following constant invocations of the 'pub' as an example of 'English culture' and a wider sentiment that cultures are fixed... rather than hybrid/fluid... Ft amazing images from www.creativeblackcountry.co.uk/desi-pubs
Little table of how the working-class young people I interviewed in Rochdale & Morecambe identified their class in the initial demographic questionnaire I did with them. Of those who said working, very few could explain why (except A-Level sociology students in Rochdale) Am I a quant person now?
Nice to get a physical copy of the @sociologicalreview.bsky.social Connected Sociologies Curriculum Project booklet Was great working on this for four years. Some very good open-access resources on the website for teachers, students & academics 👇🏽 thesociologicalreview.org/projects/con...
