AP style calls for capitalizing Senate in all specific references to governmental legislative bodies, regardless of whether the name of the state or nation is used. For example, we would write the U.S. Senate or the Senate.

You've probably heard the theory that em dashes mean someone has used AI. AP Stylebook Editor Anna Jo Bratton disagrees in a blog post that acknowledges it would be helpful to have a clear and obvious tell when AI is the author.

Going upstate for a summer vacation? Both the AP Stylebook and our primary dictionary, Merriam-Webster, show upstate lowercase and one word, with no hyphen. Merriam-Webster adds that's the case even if upstate is used as an adverb or adjective, such as in "upstate cottage."

Although Merriam-Webster's definition does not give props to Katy Perry, it does show that firework is the singular of fireworks. The plural fireworks is used in phrases like: a display of fireworks. As each singular explosion goes off, you could sing, “Baby, you're a firework!”

AP style shows group stage is two words, no hyphen. Teams in the 2026 World Cup have been assigned to 12 different four-team groups. The top two teams from each group are guaranteed to advance, as will the eight best third-place teams. Teams finishing fourth in groups are eliminated.

Use all caps for call letters and call signs. Use hyphens to separate the type of station from the base call letters: WBZ-AM, WBZ-FM, WBZ-TV.

March Madness is capitalized in all references to the yearly college basketball championships for men and women. Both terms are capitalized in NCAA Tournament, which is acceptable in all references to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's championships.

Capitalize House of Representatives when referring to a specific governmental body, such as the U.S. House of Representatives, the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Capitalize shortened references that delete the words of Representatives: the U.S. House, the Massachusetts House.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the federal holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who was born Jan. 15, 1929. The holiday is on the third Monday in January. AP style abbreviates Jr. and Sr. and does not precede them by a comma. Martin Luther King Jr. does not take a comma before Jr.
