In August if I survive the most stressful month of my life moving and finish The Sopranos I might write about generational losses of faith, not in the religious sense but in the belief that your discomfort and sacrifice at work and school and the gym and the practice room will be rewarded in the future. That eating healthy will let you live longer, that going into debt for a degree will mean a high paying job. But that might just be reinventing absurdism because NOTHING HAS CHANGED.

This article was never about playing games before definitively deciding if they are good or bad. The only legitimate definitive position under this worldview is a positive opinion. Here, we’re getting excited about games. All of them. Because Geoff Keighley told us he thinks it's good. Because it's from a Call of Duty dev. Because the marketing said they're making a "new breed of shooter" and we really believe them. Upholding feelings—especially feelings as pretextual as fun and excitement—is not the work of a critic. Nor is upholding particular feelings IGN's work as a publisher of reporting and criticism. “If we’re not getting excited about games, what are we even doing here?” is not an argument. It is pure ideology.

jay has always been a writer who, in the midst of inferno, is not inferno. a mediascape that doesn't make space for this kind of authenticity is failed.

I was willing to try to mold that authenticity into something readable. That is, on some level, the job. I opened the document. The first comment was that some readers might not know the term queer at all. I closed the document and politely emailed apologizing for not being able to go forward with the piece.
