Enjoying my first full day at #AAPTSM26

I do it to myself eaxh year. Physics wraps up the year with color & light. AP learns about sound, color & light after the AP exam in a whirlwind week. Since its also the end of the year tons of kids are trying to do make ups going back a month. So my room has all the equipment out right now. 🧪🎢

#teach180 Day 160 AP got to hear music played through induction. Physics continues discussing varying sound concepts like refraction, diffraction, etc. Good excuse to take our the spouting bowl! 🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 156🧪🎢 I renamed my optional homework "Opportunity for Physics Practice" last year following the suggestion from the "Building Thinking Classrooms." This year, the number of students doing this optional HW is in sharp decline and showing up in test results. This was my board today:

#Teach180 Day 153 AP students discovered how to maximize the amount of flux moving through a coil in five different mini experiments. For one they have to turn in their cow magnet in exchange for a strong stack of neodymiums. I made this "cow parking lot" today which worked well. 🧪🎢

Setting up our magnetic flux introduction lab with @ArborSci Galvonometers and vintage air core solenoids. Cardboard tubes wrapped around the more delicate solenoid wire helps keep them from being dented and broken. #iteachphysics 🧪🎢

#Teach180 Day 150 Second group of physics classes turned in their house projects. I always love how creative students get with these! All are made from small cardboard boxes and decorated differently. Students cut apart incandescent lights to make series and parallel independent circuits. 🎢🧪

Yesterday was our spring @ncnaapt.bsky.social meeting and it was a blast! We had Dr. General Yvonne Cagle, astronaut, and @maryroach.bsky.social, author extraordinaire, as speakers. We heard about one member's advocacy through an @aapthq.bsky.social program, and shared effective practices. 🎢🧪

#Teach180 Day 140 AP did an observation lab I got from @rhettallain.bsky.social. A 1F capacitor and some mini bulbs to observe the current changing in different RC circuits as shown by the bulb brightness. Its really great for discussing cap behavior at t=0 and t=♾️ or at least 5RC. 🎢🧪

Has anyone done the resistivity rod lab from Vernier? Its taken me a few years of grants to get the current meters, instrument amplifiers and resistivity rod sets. When I try to follow the lab manual the test seems to contradict the images? I'm hoping to use it for the first time next week. 🎢🧪

Lots of props in electrostatics: Fairy lights that can light inwards to represent a negative charge or outwards for a positive charge. Hula hoop from the ceiling representing a ring of charge. I used chicken wire to make an odd Gaussian surface and a plastic sheet for an "infinite" nonconductor.🎢🧪
