ACS' Congressional action arm asks members to contact representatives to delay OMB funding rule

Tell Your Representative to Delay OMB Funding Rule

Dear

The Senate passed the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027 (CR). to temporarily fund the government through December 11th. Included in this CR is language to temporarily block implementation of the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) proposed rule regarding federal grant funding, which if finalized could go into effect October 1st.

The House of Representatives must now take the proposed CR and vote for it before the September 30th deadline for fiscal year 2027. Currently. Representatives are on recess and back in their districts until August 31st.

Earlier this summer, the ACS community joined thousands of scientists in submitting public comments to OMB outlining how the proposed rule would impact them and weaken federal research funding.

We ask you to take this opportunity to email your Representative and ask them to support this CR and its temporary block for the OMB proposed rule. Passage of this CR is an important next step in protecting U.S. scientific competitiveness.
Temporarily blocking the proposed rule would allow continued conversations within Congress on its potential impact and could allow this rule to either be withdrawn or significantly amended before its implementation.

According to Mayor Marc Van de Vijver, the leak originated in a container of hydrogen fluoride. "That is a toxic product," he says. "Through a hole of approximately 10 by 10 centimeters in the container, the substance escaped and completely evaporated."

In total, 113 people have been taken to various nearby hospitals as a precaution because they may have come into contact with the toxic fumes. This involves both crew members and people working on the quay to load the ship. "They are all now being followed up and monitored to see if any reactions occur and to be able to intervene immediately if necessary," said Van de Vijver.

The mayor could not provide further details regarding their condition. "There is talk of a 6-hour observation period, but some may possibly have to stay in the hospital longer." No fatalities have been reported.

In the classic computer-generated movies we’re used to, like the ones in the Marvel cinematic universe, a massive amount of labor and processing power is spent on each scene and asset. Human actors perform in front of screens. The images and physics of the imagined world around them are added in later.

With generative AI, the heavy lifting is done during the pre-training process. Once the model is built, it can be used to take a scene constructed by artists and tweak it, making the physics look realistic — not by modeling the physics, but by guessing at them based on absorbing an incredibly large dataset of real-world footage.

$Chemical Methods. Determinations of galacturonic acid of pectin usually includes both the free and esterified forms, since strongly acidic media are employed in the colorimetric methods. Procedures which continue to be used widely are modifications of those described early by Dische. One is based upon reaction with cysteine (3) and the other with carbazole (4). One modification of the carbazole method, which gave a doubling in sensitivity, along with an increased stability in color and greater reproduci-bility, was reported in 1962 (5). Inclusion of borate into the assay medium was responsible for the enhancement of the method. In all the colorimetric methods, galacturonic acid is liberated during the assay by hydrolysis of polymeric pectin. An applica-tion of the carbazole method, after extraction of pectin from various fruits and vegetables, has been described (6), as has been an automated carbazole method for monitoring uronic acid levels in pectin fractions (7). A more rapid and somewhat simpler procedure for uronic acid determination was described in 1973 (8). This method is advan-tageous for determining galacturonic acid in pectin, as interfer-ence by neutral sugars is reduced.
