The Cincinnati Zoo partners with SORALO in Kenya, where local Maasai communities are leading the way in lion conservation. Together, we’re supporting efforts to reduce conflict between people and lions, protect vital habitat, and help lions and communities thrive side by side.

CREW also assesses felid health through exams that combine ultrasound and endoscopy to identify issues that may affect fertility, allowing for earlier intervention and the preservation of reproductive health.
During these trips, CREW uses assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as artificial insemination (AI) & cryopreservation of genetic materials to manage endangered cat reproduction to ensure genetically diverse populations, but also to develop new methods to support conservation efforts.
Since May of 2025, CREW scientists have traveled to 14 zoos to work with seven different cat species - African lion, sand cat, jaguar, amur leopard, fishing cat, puma, and snow leopard.
July is Wild About Wildlife Month, and at the Cincinnati Zoo’s Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW), the Imperiled Cat Signature Project is wild about collaborating with zoos across the United States to save wild cat species!

These sisters slept right through their birthday earlier this year while they were in torpor, a natural state where bears reduce their metabolic rate and activity to conserve energy during winter.

Zola ➡ Kiara ➡ Lulu! These cheetah cub sisters are so grown up! They turned one on November 3!
Ripple - Rip seems to be our bad boy of the bunch. Ripple LOVES to spar/play-fight with his brothers! Ripple seems to have taken that lesson to heart - he defends his snacks with a surprising amount of ferocity for such a tiny otter.
Scuttle - Our “foodie” of the bunch! When the otter pups finally started to explore solid foods, Scuttle dove in head first and got the hang of eating solids quicker than his brothers. He can be sassy and spicy at times and reminds us very much of his mother Munti with his big personality!
Puddles - Look for the white fur on the tip of his tail to easily identify him among the brothers. He’s super happy wrestling with his bros or venturing out into the deep water next to his Dad. He seems to have a sweet disposition overall.
Splash - Seems to be our little introvert of the bunch! If a pup is ever missing from the action, it’s usually Splash that is away from his brothers playing contentedly by himself or napping in a corner. Splash has discovered the joys of having “me time” early in life.
