And to think just last summer @andyburnham.bsky.social signed the fossil fuel treaty, a pact to introduce legal measures to phase out coal, oil and gas – urging "all governments" to join him Life comes at you fast www.carbonbrief.org/28-quotes-fr...
“London is not just calling, it’s cooking,” says UN chief António Guterres He’s giving an address at London Climate Action Week, at an event well attended by key climate figures (from COP30 president André Corrêa do Lago to London mayor Sadiq Khan)
At the final plenary of the 1st fossil-fuel conf, the hosts have presented "three workstreams" These are: 🌎The development of national roadmaps away from fossil fuels 🌎Addressing "macroeconomic dependencies and financial architecture" 🌎Addressing "trade and investment balance for decarbonisation"
It's officially been confirmed that Tuvalu, along with other Pacific Small Islands Developing States, will host the 2nd conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels in 2027🇹🇻 Tuvalu is also calling for a "binding international instrument to manage fossil fuel supply and demand"
I’m at the opening plenary of 1st conf on transitioning away from fossil fuels, co-hosted by 🇨🇴 and 🇳🇱 So far we’ve heard from 🇳🇬🇹🇻🇪🇸🇧🇪🇲🇻🇪🇺🇻🇺🇵🇼🇨🇲 Still to come:🇩🇪🇬🇧🇫🇷🇬🇹🇸🇮🇵🇦🇹🇿🇵🇹
Colombia's fossil-fuel roadmap is led by Prof Piers Forster, head of the Priestley Centre at the University of Leeds It says Colombia can cut total energy emissions by 90% on 2015 levels by 2050 This will require "considerable" upfront investment, but could end in a net economic benefit of $280bn
The new science panel was launched by Johan Rockström of @pik-potsdam.bsky.social and Brazilian scientist Carlos Nobre It aims to provide nations and talks with quick analysis for transitioning away from fossil fuels It will involve "50-100" scientists and be based at the University of São Paulo
Hola from Santa Marta! The 1st transition away from fossil fuels conf has kicked off with 3 new science initiatives 🌎A new Science Panel for Global Energy Transition 🌎A science-led "synthesis report" with 12 action insights 🌎A "roadmap" for Colombia to get away from FFs More on each one below...
NEW: North Sea misinformation is rife in UK media, as the O&G lobby uses the energy crisis to push gov to issue new licences We tackle myths on emissions, tax, bills, jobs One key point is new drilling will barely change future output, as the basin is in decline www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-ni...
NEW: More North Sea drilling would do far less to reduce the UK's reliance on volatile gas imports than the continued expansion of renewables and clean tech Full analysis by me, @joshgabbatiss.bsky.social and @drsimevans.carbonbrief.org ⬇️ www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-why...
See Carbon Brief's take on the version of the text circulated before COP30's final plenary (Not final but no complaints raised in the room) unfccc.int/sites/defaul...
Press conference room absolutely packed at #COP30 as 20+ ministers gather to call for a roadmap away from fossil fuels to be a key outcome of this summit (Many more countries have expressed their support behind the scenes)
The loud and colourful display is a marked change from COP27, COP28 and COP29. These were held in countries with restrictive laws on protests, forcing civil society to hold much smaller demonstrations inside the COP’s blue zone, which is technically UN soil.
PEOPLE’S PROTEST DAY🪧🇧🇷 For the first time since COP26, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of the COP host city, Belém, to call for climate justice and the protection of Indigenous rights.
Bom dia! I’m in Belém for the next two weeks for #COP30 representing @carbonbrief.org Please come and say hello, keen to hear your thoughts on negotiations or about your research/specialty 🇧🇷🦜
NEW: Just 28% of nations have released plans for reversing nature loss a year after UN deadline 🐝8/17 megadiverse yet to produce their plans, called "NBSAPs" 🪲Includes Brazil, most biodiverse nation and COP30 host 🐜All G7 nations now have a plan, except for US www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-jus...
NEW:🌎Half of global emissions covered by 2035 climate pledges after UN summit in New York🌎 China, Russia, Turkey and 8 other nations announced new pledges at the UN climate summit But two-thirds of countries are still to announce their new NDCs Analysis⬇️ www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-hal...
Trump also claimed that "there’s tremendous oil that hasn’t been found in the North Sea" This flies in the face of evidence showing both oil and gas production in the North Sea have already peaked and are in decline, regardless of UK climate policies
Today's @carbonbrief.org Daily Briefing factchecks the false climate claims in Donald Trump's tirade to the UN www.carbonbrief.org/daily-brief/...
Really interesting to hear thoughts from @mikaelaloach.bsky.social @zackpolanski.bsky.social @elpinchbeck.bsky.social on offering alternatives to rising climate denial and connecting with disillusioned people at the Guardian climate assembly
New factcheck: North Sea gas is not ‘four times cleaner’ than LNG imports That stat only refers to extraction emissions. The lion's share of gas emissions come from burning it See chart below and my factcheck with @drsimevans.carbonbrief.org for the details www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-no...
What is the word to describe the feeling you get when you write about how young(ish) women who are regularly exposed to climate information are more likely to feel climate anxiety... Really enjoyed speaking to researchers for this @carbonbrief.org explainer www.carbonbrief.org/explainer-wh...
Bizarre to be (incorrectly) referenced in the federal report supporting the EPA's proposal to revoke the scientific finding that underpins the government’s legal authority to combat climate change www.energy.gov/sites/defaul... (More on that story here: www.carbonbrief.org/daily-brief/...)
Landmark ICJ advisory opinion still being delivered We've just heard: "Fossil fuel production, consumption, the granting of FF exploration licences or the provision of fossil fuel subsidies may constitute an internationally wrongful act attributable to that state." webtv.un.org/en/asset/k1c...
Hello, I’m in Kyoto for #COP3 for @carbonbrief.org, please feel free to say hi! (At the Kyoto play in London last night, I’d massively recommend it!)
COP16 is closing! Colombian politician and COP president Susana Muhamad is getting a lengthy standing ovation for her work leading the talks
The lightning speed has continued! Parties just adopted the GBF monitoring framework AND the text on planning, monitoring, reporting, and review (PMRR), including the global review Again no objections Susana Muhamad says countries have given "arms, legs and muscles" to the GBF
Countries have now adopted the financial mechanism text, after no further objections
Countries have now turned to the separate financial mechanism text... EU raising objections with paragraph 17 (below is what it currently looks like) www.cbd.int/doc/c/0596/b...
