🇪🇺President von der Leyen’s proposal to weaken the #EUETS, the bedrock of EU climate action, sends a signal to companies and foreign governments that the Commission will easily cave before EU law might inconvenience them. My piece: davekeating.substack.com/p/faced-with...
Today's Substack post is about Europe’s “cognitive dependence” on America and why we can’t achieve sovereignty without shedding it. davekeating.substack.com/p/can-europe...
My observations on the generational and geographic differences in reactions to my book The Owned Continent calling for Europe to derisk its relationship with the United States. davekeating.substack.com/p/keynote-sp...
A clip from my keynote speech to the EESC conference in Bulgaria last week – about the need for EU federalism. Watch the full video here: davekeating.substack.com/p/keynote-sp...
"Europe's New German Question" A look at why Germany is holding the EU back, and why the increased European military spending buying 🇺🇸weapons is not going to set Europe free. www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/c...
In yesterday's interview with The Diplomacy Podcast about my book TheOwnedContinent.eu, I talked about why Europe's unhealthy obsession with America over decades has led to an instinct for servility. Watch here: open.substack.com/pub/nicholas...
When I grew up in the US it was like being a fish in a fishbowl. Everyone's looking in at us, but we don't realise it because we can't see outside the bowl. My interview with ZN: youtube.com/watch?v=Jd2HfA… My book: TheOwnedContinent.eu
My thoughts on the awkward position Ireland finds itself in these days, with its traditional role as a ‘bridge’ across the Atlantic now seen as more of a political liability than an asset. davekeating.substack.com/p/ireland-is...
It's 🇺🇸Independence Day, and I'm in Ireland at the port that my great great great grandfather departed to America from in 1860. In this video I talk about my own emigration journey in the opposite direction. Watch here: davekeating.substack.com/p/video-my-j...
This particular anecdote about the humiliation of European leaders is particularly illustrative: "Trump despises Europeans and their leaders, as shown by his blunder during his meeting with the NATO Secretary General."
"The EU must enter into resistance mode against Trump's America" says Morning Post today, laying out a damning litany of how our leader's repeated surrenders have endangered their citizens. open.substack.com/pub/europemo...
I'm in Ireland the next few days on a press trip as the Irish 🇪🇺Council presidency kicks off. Two of the biggest items they'll have to deal with are bringing negotiations on the EU's next long-term budget to a close, and an awkward role as broker for tech sovereignty talks.
This is the really key passage that gets to the heart of why our European leaders are failing us.
Appreciate the mention, @euobserver.com! And spot-on take from Samuel Dempsey about how much the Brussels bubble still doesn't understand that the old America is gone. euobserver.com/224878/the-e...
German MEP Damian Boeselager, vice chair of the 🇪🇺Parliament's economy committee, warns that Trump has a kill switch to turn off Europe's economy. "Not every explosion makes a loud boom, but last Friday, I could definitely feel the earth tremble. Because Trump actually pressed a 'red button'..." 🧵
Protesters just unfurled a banner in Grand Place condemning today's America celebration in Brussels. “It's shameful 🇧🇪authorities are rolling out the red carpet for this administration in the heart of Europe, while US policies are wreaking havoc worldwide" davekeating.substack.com/p/sundays-tr...
Trump has been telling false anecdotes about European leaders for years. Until this weekend, none of them personally pushed back and said he was lying. Then Giorgia Meloni changed the game. I spoke with @ljohnson.bsky.social tonight about what this means. davekeating.substack.com/p/video-the-...
Ten years on, the poisoned chalice of Brexit has claimed its sixth prime minister. Will Burnham be any different? So far the signs are not promising. My take: davekeating.substack.com/p/brexit-has...
“Payment systems are not neutral; they are instruments of power," says French MEP Gilles Boyer. "We, Europeans, have had many wake-up calls about our dependence on the US. We’re fully awake now, but we’re not always acting" Today's vote makes "a sovereign, pan-European payment solution a reality"
On Friday, following the #EUCO 🇪🇺summit, I spoke with South China Morning Post's Finbarr Bermingham about the outcome of the China debate. He said there's consensus that something is broken in the 🇪🇺🇨🇳 trade relationship, but no agreement on the solution. davekeating.substack.com/p/video-inte...
“Leak warfare is undermining the EU” argues Morning Post today. Indeed, and yet again there are suspicions that the leak which derailed last week’s European Council summit (perhaps intended to wound Costa) came from the 13th floor of the Berlaymont. europemorningpost.substack.com/p/leak-warfa...
On Friday – at the end of #EUCO 🇪🇺summit – I spoke with @fbermingham.bsky.social, EU correspondent South China Morning Post, about the outcome of the China debate. Why did they call this debate "global macroeconomic imbalances" rather than call it a China debate?
During his closing press conference, 🇫🇷President Macron brushes off concerns about #EUCO chair Costa setting up initial contacts with Russia for future talks - something that just came to light and Costa briefed leaders about today.
Today the #EUCO 🇪🇺leaders will be talking about: 💶 The next long-term EU budget 🚬 The situation for illicit drugs in Europe 🇮🇷 The situation in the Middle East Final press conferences expected around 3pm.
Day 2 of #EUCO 🇪🇺summit about to start. 3 significant developments yesterday: 📜 Council conclusion supporting Ukraine with all 27 member states 🤝 Disagreement over who should represent the EU in talks with Russia 🇨🇳 Tasking Commission to draw up possible trade retaliation instruments against China
As Morning Post notes this morning, there's a mismatch between the European ambition national leaders are calling for and the amount they’re willing to spend on it. And the media narrative is still that the EU already spends too much and is wasteful. But hypocrisy is nothing new here at #EUCO.
Here are the #EUCO conclusions that have just been adopted by all 27 EU leaders. Now they've just started a (very late) dinner will they will discuss relations with China. www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/pre...
Entering #EUCO summit, Spain's Pedro Sanchez says it would be wrong for the EU to make an enemy of China (given deteriorating relations with 🇺🇸). China is a "potential ally" he says. 🇪🇺🇨🇳relations are the subject of tonight's dinner.
