but if you look closely at actual paintings you will see that's not at all true and it's one of the reasons i still encourage people to go to museums and look at paintings in person. they are often surprisingly raw!

I'll start! Obviously this is one of my most recent pieces so I learned a ton from it but what surprised me was how much I learned about materials. I painted it on 300lb cold press watercolor paper and a lot of my usual tricks didn't work well so I had to improvise a lot and experiment.
