Outdoes every American women in prison movie by a mile. It's campy, erotic, horrifying and revolutionary. Perfectly paced and executed exploitation cinema with a sharp, cynical sense of humour.
The best gateway into David Lynch's body of work and perhaps the purest distillation of his aesthetic sensibilities. Dennis Hopper and Dean Stockwell should have both won an Oscar. Wall to wall cinematic magic.
John Carpenter's most reactionary film is actually a lot more ambiguous and subversive than many of it's critics picked up on. Cops and criminals team up to fight off a zombie like army of the counter-culture's ghosts. Stylish, economical, terrifying.
Another ahead of it's time exploitation classic. A pitch perfect mix of gleeful perversity and suburban-gothic melancholy with all time performances from the twin girls and a cretinous Sid Haig chewing both the scenery and thier unwitting houseguests. Hooper and Waters both clearly took notes.
Another American genre bloodbath with unexpected depth and resonance that explores themes of intergenerational trauma of industrialised slaughter and the horror of the decay of the American working class. No idea why that still resonates with people
A master-class in editing that created the template for 20th century American and Hong Kong action cinema. Everything from Commando to Hard Boiled to the Matrix are stylistically indebted to this melancholic American bloodbath about the previous century's killers being overtaken by modernity
