Between 2021 and 2023, 28 people in my community died because they could not be brought to a hospital in time. From asthma attacks to complications in childbirth, these were preventable deaths that tragically were the result of lack of access to health care in rural Lower Richland.
11 years ago, nine worshippers were murdered at Mother Emanuel AME Church. Today, we honor the Emanuel Nine and recommit ourselves to the work of justice. South Carolina still lacks a statewide hate crimes law. Their memory deserves more than remembrance. It deserves action. #EmanuelNine
