UPDATE: Elizabeth Calhoun, Executive Director of The Grand Cinema, just sent out an email sharing some more information about what the impact will be on the theater this week following a threat they recieved Saturday. Specifically, they're increasing security measures and restricting bags this week📽️

Text from an email that reads:

Tacoma Community,

The Grand Cinema received threats from an individual on Saturday, June 20th. Our team worked in coordination with the Tacoma Police Department to inspect the space. Out of an abundance of caution, we made the decision to fully close the theater on Sunday, June 21st. We would like to clarify that to our knowledge, the threat was not, in any way, associated with our programming.

The Tacoma Police Department has thoroughly inspected The Grand Cinema twice and made clear to us that it is safe to reopen. As a precautionary measure, we are increasing security measures to ensure the safety of our staff, volunteers, audience members, and tenants of the building.

We will also restrict bags from entering the theater this week, at the recommendation of TPD. Your safety is our top priority.

At this time, we cannot share further details due to ongoing police investigations. The Grand Cinema team will communicate additional details when we are able. Please refrain from speculating, as spreading misinformation can be harmful to the investigations.

The Grand Cinema is committed to being a safe and welcoming place for everyone in Tacoma and the South Sound. We are very disappointed that this happened, but our team is grateful for everyone’s patience, understanding, and support as we’ve been working through this.

A couple quick corrections/notes to the above reply: there is now some different reporting out there about when the timing of the call was (King 5 has it as being received at 8:20 p.m.) and, in regards to the lead image on the TNT story that also appears in the body this is definitely NOT The Grand📽️

The Grand Cinema in Tacoma is cancelling all showings after they recieved a verbal threat over the phone Saturday evening. Director of Operations, Pat.C Noriega, posted an update on Instagram, saying refunds will be offered for all screenings and, if you don't get one by EOD, to shoot them an email📽️

Currently dying at the fact that the Washington State Department of Health department issued a warning to all visiting the state that our weed is VERY strong & not to be taken lightly. The Washington State Department of Health is warning visitors that Washington's marijuana products may be stronger than they're used to.

Hospitals have seen an increase in emergency visits related to marijuana, according to the health department, as tens of thousands of tourists visit for the World Cup.

In its World Cup visitors guide, the health department says cannabis potency can vary and recommends starting with a low dose and going slow. Edibles can take up to three hours to feel the effects, which can last up to 24 hours.
