Currently stuck in a traffic jam on North Bridge, caused by illegally parked cars and private drivers in the bus lane. @stephenjenkinson.bsky.social It was actually quicker with only two lanes. We’ve been overtaken by 9 Voi bikes so far.
Data from the city's previous hire bike scheme, Just Eat, is available - and it's brilliant for showing where latent demand for cycling exists, and where we should be investing in more cycle infrastucture. This is an extract from 20th June, 2020 (rpubs.com/edtiss/justeat) :

Leith Walk Voi-d at 8.30am. There is massive latent demand for cycling in Edinburgh, suppressed by dangerous driving, a lack of secure storage, and crowded out by excellent public transport provision. And with the tram out of action and some cycle infrastructure in place - here it is.
Closest one for a while. Junction of Greenside Row and Leith Street, cut straight into me, blasted horn after nearly knocking me over. SO23 KZZ, have photo of the driver.
The distribution of Voi bikes is endlessly fascinating. 10pm, Edinburgh, a Wednesday.
These costs are incorporated in that figure (note this is per collision, not per injury):
New all-time record set on the Leith Walk cycle lane - 2,568 cyclists on 30th April, 2026. There has been another surge in cycling this spring after slow growth in 2025, and last year's record has already been broken 10 times.
For those commutes within Edinburgh's bypass, around 90% are short enough to cycle, and 80% have a public transport option available:

5 minutes on the Edinburgh cycle network and this is what you can hear. Wrens were particularly noisy this morning - but no Goldfinches, Blue Tits or Blackbirds which I usually spot. I'm using the Merlin Bird ID app, with my phone attached to my handlebar.
Final stats for the Omni Centre cycle lane in 2025: a slight 1% increase on 2024 with 580,000 journeys; a new record set of 2,265 cyclists on Friday, 7th November. The significant increase in numbers in prior years came after the development of cycling infrastructure on Leith Walk.
This one was so long it went into the rim and nearly bounced me off the bike. Replacing a wheel was not something I had planned for 2026...

*All-time record* set at the Omni Centre cycle lane on the 7th November - 2,265 cycle journeys. I can only speculate that the rollout of Voi e-bikes has significantly boosted cycling in Edinburgh this autumn, bucking the seasonal trend.
Well done to Edinburgh Police for calling what these things are - motorcycles. I hope the rider recovers from his injuries soon.
Hello @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social , any reason pedestrians/cyclists have to wait through 6 traffic phases (c5 minutes) before we get a chance to cross London Road?
Looks like a strong autumn for the Omni Centre cycle lane in Edinburgh - possibly linked to the recent introduction of Voi e-bikes? Otherwise, numbers have stabilised after large increases over the past few years. More infrastructure - particularly cycle hangars - is needed to sustain momentum.
Elm Row is just a car-centric mess now. Could have been one of the nicest bits of public realm in Edinburgh.
Since when did parking on zig zags become socially - and legally - acceptable? A complete lack of enforcement here on Commercial Street, mirrored across Edinburgh.
