Parents for Future Scotland became a charity two years ago as a result of grassroots parent organising and is now a small self-employed staff team with a growing network of activists. We seek to make climate action the norm among all parents in Scotland. We are in the midst of a big step change, increasing our influence and reach across the country, and we need you to help us in doing so. SATURDAY 2nd AUGUST: Ratho Climbing Arena, Surf Resort, Union Canal & Almondell Park

A casual social ride of 16 miles using a mix of some of the 144 miles of the Livingston path network, Route 75 of Sustrans National Cycle Network, quiet country road and surfaced track, maybe a bit of Local History, bits the Shale Trail, and Howden Rock Ramp, the UKs biggest rock ramp.

Ride details, including station if coming from Edinburgh...

MEET: By 10:30, at the seats outside the café at Howden Park Centre, Livingston.

PARKING: Please use the overflow car park east of the original Howden House.

TRAIN : The nearest station is Livingston North.

ROUTE: Take the Livingston Path Network along the Loan Path through Ladywell turning east onto the Harrysmuir Path to Pumpherston. A short section along Drumshoreland Road and onto the Uphall to East Calder track, formerly a rail link now part of the Shale Trail to Pumpherston Oil Works crossing the Camps Viaduct high above Almondell Park to East Calder.

Anyone from East Calder could arrange to meet us at the CALDERWOOD CAFE We will likely be there no earlier than 11:15 or shortly after.

Continue through the Calderwood housing development onto Clifton Road and minor road to the path beside Clifton Hall Road to the EICA, the worlds biggest indoor climbing centre.

Refreshments 🍴 There is a café down stairs or bring something to eat.

With a visit next door to the NEW SURF RESORT

Back out to the footpath by the road, downhill to Wilkies Basin onto the surfaced mud free Union Canal tow path (NCN754) and across Lins Mill Aqueduct to Muirend, by quiet road to go along route 75 of Sustrans National Cycle Network, through Almondell Country Park. Look out for the Kingfisher that flies between the two weirs at the east end of the park, also otter has been seen.

Returning to the HPC by the river Almond, stopping at Howden rock ramp, the UKs largest rock ramp, Almond Park.

Grant Report: Tern Orox Electric Cargo Bike
Grant recipient: Markus Stitz Grant received: £2,000 in July 2024 Purpose: Contribution towards the purchase of a Tern Orox S12 electric cargo bike Reporting period: July 2024 – July 2026 Mileage cycled: 4,303 miles
Overview
The £2,000 grant enabled me to purchase a Tern Orox electric cargo bike for use in my work as a writer, filmmaker, photographer, cycling guide, route designer and event organiser.
Since July 2024, the bike has become an important working vehicle. It has been used to transport books, professional camera equipment, tools and event supplies throughout Scotland. Its large carrying capacity, electric assistance and extreme off-road capability allowed me to use it to replace a car or van on journeys that would be difficult to complete with a conventional bicycle, or a 4-wheeler for more difficult off-road terrain.
The bike has supported commercial work, community projects, cycling events, tourism development and local deliveries. It has also provided a highly visible example of how electric cargo bikes can be used for professional and practical purposes beyond urban deliveries.

Powderhall railway path campaign..

3.3 Powderhall railway path ?
A campaign has been launched to put new momentum behind plans to convert the disused Powderhall rail line into a walk/ wheel/ cycle path between Lochend Park and St Marks Park, linking East Edinburgh into the North Edinburgh network.
At the Holyrood election, surprisingly, the SNP put support for this very local scheme into their Scotland manifesto. However, although local SNP MSP Ben Macpherson has expressed support for the scheme, and for the new campaign, there is no sign of new government funding. Council funding is probably unlikely in the near term, as the path would be competing with other active travel projects. There is also the slight possibility of volunteer work to do a basic (non-tarmac) initial conversion – as Spokes did long ago for the 1km ‘Pilton Path.’
The other holdup is ownership – Network Rail owns the land. However, they have confirmed in a FOI response to the new campaign that there are no intentions to reinstate rail use, and that they are “in discussion with Edinburgh Council about a sale for an Active travel project.”
If you live in Ben Macpherson’s constituency [Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith] please contact him to ask what he is doing to ensure the negotiations are completed soon, and that government funding will be available, given support for the project in the SNP Holyrood manifesto. Note: Ben is only likely to follow up if you are a constituent.

In Spring 2026, Spokes granted me £1822.50 towards the purchase of a Tern Quick Haul and accessories from Soul Cycles.
I am an art therapist, puppeteer and group facilitator based in Edinburgh and I have been self-employed since 2016. My practice revolves around working with children and young people with a focus on creativity and wellbeing. In my current working pattern, I am in a different school or community venue everyday and was completely relying on my car to get me to these places. I usually have kit with me, such as art materials, and this was too heavy to carry on a bus. Recently, I have noticed more cargo bikes in the city and know a couple of people who have them so I started thinking about whether this would work for me. Staff at Soul Cycles told me about the Spokes Cargobike fund and I was elated to find out that I could get financial help to make this idea a reality.
My Tern Quick-Haul (Meryl Steep) has made my commute to work so much more enjoyable and with the Clubhouse Mini and Storm Box Mini accessories, it has the perfect carrying abilities for my kit. Parking a bike has been much easier than finding parking for a car and I feel better about the environmental impact of my travel. The bike, especially when fully loaded, is very heavy and it took some getting used to riding it and navigating it into my hallway in the evening. However, I am getting better at loading the weight evenly and more practised at steering it into awkward spaces. I found the gears a bit crunchy at first, but took the bike for its one month courtesy tune-up at Soul Cycles and they sorted it out. Now the Quick Haul is riding very smoothly and helping me get some vitamin D and fresh air on my way to work.

Having just been on holiday to Sweden and Norway, I am envious of their cycling infrastructure and how cycling is much more normalised in Scandinavia. I used to think Edinburgh was too hilly for me to cycle, but ha…

🔥 Heritage group The Cockburn Association says three major fires on Holyrood Park's hills within a year 'is becoming a disturbing pattern'. They wrote:

"Edinburgh declared a climate emergency back in 2019, and fires like this one are a reminder of what that declaration was responding to: drier, hotter summers create the kind of gorse and grassland that catches fire easily, leaving parkland increasingly vulnerable to this kind of damage. What could perhaps be written off as a series of unfortunate one-offs is becoming a disturbing pattern, and one that lines up all too well with what the climate emergency warned us about all those years ago."

I would like the High Street made much more user-friendly for people on foot and cycling, with car dominance greatly reduced.

It is difficult to cross the road at some times of day, and unpleasant to cycle along it. This makes it a less attractive place to visit and to shop.
Having pavement parking legalised is completely outdated and makes the High Street looks like it is a free-for-all for motor traffic. It's particularly bad and the east end, where sometimes it's even difficult to get along the footway with a buggy or pushing ones bike.

Please provide any other information that you think is relevant to your idea.
These are some of the measures I'd like to see, to reduce car dominance and vastly improve conditions for walking and cycling. Incidentally, I certainly don't think the 4-way junction would be a panacea, as local traffic would build up further unless the High STreet was closed off (with a bus/taxi gate) on the same day the junction opened.

High Street ideas...
1. Speed limit reduced to 15mph
2. Parking removed entirely on the north side
3. Bidirectional cycleroute installed on the north side
4. Continuous footways at all side-road junctions with the High Street
5. Frequent crossing points, as in many French towns, without Belisha beacons or light-control.

Trams are currently only able to operate between the Airport and Shandwick Place but all options are being explored to re-establish operations along the full route as soon as possible.

Officers are working closely with Voi Bikes to provide additional capacity, particularly in and around Leith, and will be expanding the fleet from 800 to 1000 bikes by the end of next week. Additional bike parking infrastructure is being arranged in the city centre to accommodate those travelling into the city from Leith and Newhaven.

Complex and time-consuming work is ongoing to make the fire-damaged building safe, alongside preserving as much of its heritage value as possible.

We have started work on City Plan 2040 which will be our next local development plan after City Plan 2030.

There are several stages that we need to go through as we prepare City Plan 2040.
Evidence Report

The Evidence Report is the first stage of the City Plan 2040 process. We have completed our Evidence Report and it was approved by Planning Committee on 3 June 2026 and agreed by Council on 25 June 2026. It will be submitted to the Scottish Government for ‘Gate Check’ who will decide whether we have sufficient evidence to start to prepare the Proposed Plan.

2030 Climate Strategy
Edinburgh’s 2030 Climate Strategy was approved in 2021. It sets out the steps that
Edinburgh will take to tackle the challenge of climate change and achieve the aim of
becoming a net zero city by 2030. The Strategy is guided by seven core principles:
• Just transition
• Progressive policy
• Adapting to unavoidable climate change and preventing future emissions
• Reducing our global footprint
• Fabric first
• Electrification first
• Creating 20-minute neighbourhoods.

One of the Strategy’s visions is that it will create resilient places and spaces for low-
carbon living, underpinned by putting in place new planning policies that enable net
zero, climate resilient growth through a new local development plan.
To achieve its aims of tackling climate change and achieving net zero by 2030, the
Climate Strategy includes seven priority actions and a series of wider actions. These
actions include measures that encourage increased net zero emission transport by:
• Investing in active travel
• Developing integrated public transport
• Decarbonising buses
• Improving local air quality
• Better management of the city centre
• Supporting public sector transition to electric vehicles
• Delivering electric vehicle infrastructure
• Engaging with citizens.

Fife Council is marking another major milestone for the Levenmouth Connectivity Project as the new Mountfleurie Bridge officially opens to the public.

The £5.8 million active travel crossing, which stretches over the Levenmouth Rail Link between Kirkland and Mountfleurie, provides residents with a safe, fully accessible route for walking, wheeling and cycling.

The 100‑metre structure reconnects communities, schools and services on either side of the railway - restoring an important local link that has been unavailable during rail reinstatement works.

The Levenmouth Connectivity Project is the Leven Programme’s flagship project. It looks to transform walking, wheeling and cycling in the Levenmouth area.

The wider ambition of the project is to connect Loch Leven to the Firth of Forth through a world-class active travel network alongside the River Leven and surrounding communities, enabling local people and visitors to travel sustainably along the entire 26km length of the river with connections to public transport hubs, residential areas, schools, shops and places of work.

The first stage of our vision, which focusses on the Levenmouth area and a 5km stretch of the river from Cameron Bridge to where it meets the Firth of Forth at Leven. has been delivered by Fife Council and Green Action Trust, funded by Places for Everyone (an active travel infrastructure programme backed by Transport Scotland and administered by Sustrans) and the Levelling Up Fund.

We opened consultation with local people in 2022 regarding finalising the routes as we entered the detailed design phase. In the Community Involvement section at the bottom of this page you'll find the feedback we received and how this has informed design.

Construction of Phase 1 of the Active Travel Network, providing links to the railway stations at Leven and Cameron Bridge, commenced in 2025 and the path is now in place. The planting and seating is set to be completed in March 2026.

Developed and delivered by Fife Council’s Roads and Transportation Services with funding from the UK Government, the bridge has been constructed by Network Rail and its contractor following extensive planning, engineering and installation activity.

Councillor Alistair Suttie, Convener of the Levenmouth Area Committee, welcomed the opening: “It’s fantastic to see this much‑needed connection open for the people of Levenmouth and it’s a real step forward.

“A great deal of effort has gone into delivering this bridge, and I’m delighted residents will be able to use it from this weekend.”

Final installation and finishing works have been underway since the bridge was successfully lifted into place late last year.

Contractors have since completed surfacing, safety features and landscaping to ready the structure for public use.

John Mitchell, Head of Fife Council’s Roads and Transportation Services, added: “Seeing the Mountfleurie Bridge fully completed is a proud moment for everyone involved.

“It provides a vital link over the rail line and forms a key part of the wider network of active travel routes connecting into Leven and Cameron Bridge stations.

“This opening marks another important step in making it easier for people to move around Levenmouth safely and sustainably.”
