There is some evidence of young birds born further south heading north as their first trip - go that's what you could be seeing. Adults don't bother, so you just see young 🤔
Ooo it takes quite a while to reach full maturity. I think like 3 years. Is a complex species in terms of range. Started heading north in the 1930s - 40s with little explanation. Also...

It's used often as example in propsals to change the way emoticon are added to the set! Got to get to burger or Switzerland levels of usage!

At Waugh Bridge in Houston, Texas an urban colony of 200,000 free-tailed bats 🦇 attract Black Crowned Night Heron. The local Herons have learned to fly up into the grooves under the bridge to dislodge and grab a fresh bat meal 🦇🥢 . Adapt to Thrive!

They're quite bit smaller but that doesn't show up on photos does it. It's in the shorter stubbier beak, & more rounded head, red eye, shorter neck. That sharp single feather head plume is classic too We always say ID-ing Herons isn't critical. Just enjoying their presence is more life enhancing
