Doctor of Birds at SUNY Oswego. Opinions = mine, not representative of NY state government. I run a banding station: @rcbobirds on IG.
A whole bunch of scraggly looking birds rolled through the banding station yesterday. It’s molting season! These are all adult birds caught in the middle of their prebasic molt. Notice how they sequentially regrow flight feathers so they can still fly while molting.
Last CERW of the summer. They’re getting all molty and ready to leave already! 😢
Loved this story. Books are so dangerous in such a great way. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/09/s...
Anyone know anything about Center for Wildlife Studies? They offer a bunch of online wildlife courses, “badges”, certificates, and what not. Have a student interested in them but don’t know if they’re legit… www.centerforwildlifestudies.org
Yellow-crowned Night Herons look so weird when you see them head-on
The only thing my kids watch on TV is classic Thomas the Tank Engine, so all the insults they know are train related. Like my three-year-old just got mad at me and said, “You old bucket of bolts!”
Heard about the new taxonomic split? This is now the Neon Yellow Warbler.
A delicate and mysterious denizen of the highest canopy, almost otherworldly in the hand. Meant to be glanced only briefly… backlit and cryptic against the sky blue. An immense privilege to breathe the same air, if only for a moment. 🩵
Holy shit this is a real bird #binoblast (Black-capped Tanager)
