Europe's indecisiveness has invited many a barb.
Scott Bessent, America's treasury secretary, recently quipped that the continent's only response to crises (in that case one caused by Mr Trump's bizarre obsession with invading Greenland) was to create
"the dreaded European working group". Ha ha; most of the time working groups produce better results than carrier groups. Confabbing, summit-holding and deliberating result in decisions that—when they are eventually taken —have some sort of logic and general buy-in. Can Mr Bessent say the same of his team! It is anybody's guess what America's tariff rates will be next Tuesday. Europe's can be divined a decade away.
