'The Book Lover's (& Movie) Quiz Book' (1 & 2) author. Book quiz host - The Betsey Trotwood (next one 18/08). Sales & marketing manager at British Library Publishing. All opinions my own! All quiz dates etc here
Book #35 this year was Rodge Glass’ look at the fabulous comeback by @suedehq.bsky.social. I would say if you’re a big Suede fan (which I am), this is a must read! Out 27/08, thank you @newmodernbooks.bsky.social for the proof.
Book #34 this year was Cool Machine, the final book in @colsonwhitehead.com’s Harlem trilogy, it might be my favourite of the three. I’m going to miss Carney, Pepper et al but they’re going out on a high. (Also, the title was bugging me until till I realised where it was from - check CW’s bio 🦇)
The next Betsey Book Quiz is a week on Tuesday (18/08). Let me know if you’d like to attend! It’s sponsored by the lovely @bertsbooks.bsky.social, there are many prizes & it’s fun! Email gpwigglesworth@icloud.com for details.
I have been poor at documenting my reads on here (i can only apologise), this was the last book I finished. A goods-in team at a big store in small town USA bicker & bond over a plan to get a useless manager promoted (& out of their hair). Good stuff. Took me back to Borders Leeds! (Overnights!)
Am reading (& loving) the final book in Colson Whitehead’s NYC trilogy Cool Machine.
My birthday (last week) books (& 1 blu-ray) haul is now complete! Lucky me! I got many other lovely things too (including the new LUFC away shirt 😍).
But the Lightroom film is fabulous, I loved it (only minor gripe - barely anything from Blackstar, nothing from Next Day). Very cool though. #Bowie
Got back from my Bowie Birthday Bonanza (Lightroom followed by v&a) to find these beauties from @newmodernbooks.bsky.social. All 3 look ace.
I’m watching old Only Connects so here’s some quiz for you! All these books begin with the letter O - how many do you know? Yes, this is from last night’s Betsey Book Quiz, sponsored by @bertsbooks.bsky.social. Next one is 18/08.
The next Betsey Book Quiz sponsored by @bertsbooks.bsky.social is one week today (21/07)! I have 1 table left. Let me know etc It’s my birthday quiz (which is 2 days later) so I’ll be even more self indulgent than usual! 😁.
Next Betsey Book Quiz is one week tonight! 2 tables left at time of typing. Let me know book nerds. @zenoagency.bsky.social
This was book 26 & I have to say I was disappointed. Interesting premise but it’s never explained at all (not just how it happens - don’t mind that, but why? What’s the point?) & it just fades out (almost literally).
This was my last read, a draft dodging, peace making road trip across America. A quick, entertaining read. Really enjoyed it. (Much better than the Librarianist, which I thought really fizzled out).
Book #24 was this one by Cathi Unsworth. Very good on the feel of the time (London ww2 - soho). Quite straightforward in as much as the detective solves the murders quite easily but very enjoyable characterisation & subplots. Recommended.
The Betsey Book Quiz, sponsored by @bertsbooks.bsky.social was an absolute pleasure last night. A packed room full of good & wise people. Much fun was had! Next one is June 16th.
This was book 22 & in a fairly infrequent occurrence I didn’t really like it. It just snuck past my 50 page rule - but I should have stopped. I kept thinking it might build on its interesting premise. But it did not. Onwards.
The next Betsey Book Quiz, sponsored by @bertsbooks.bsky.social is on Tuesday (12/05) & despite another tube strike I am nearly full - 1 table left. Let me know if you’d like it. 📕 🧠 🍻
Book 21 was this very fine look at the final 3 Talk Talk albums & MH’s solo LP. I thoroughly enjoyed it & of course it sends you back to the marvellous music! Congratulations @graemethomson.bsky.social on producing such a great read from the most reticent of subjects! @newmodernbooks.bsky.social
Book #20 was this which has been on my list for a long long time. Some incredibly unpleasant people (not all, but a lot of them) making amazing music. Though I will never understand why people rate the New York Dolls.
Here’s the Bad Cover Version Round from the last Betsey Book Quiz. These all begin with L. How many do you know? @zenoagency.bsky.social
Exciting book post! Thank you Dusty at @newmodernbooks.bsky.social this is going straight to the top of my TBR pile. @graemethomson.bsky.social @peteselby.bsky.social
Book #19 this year was Waiting on a Friend by Natalie Adler. Set in NYC in the 80’s as AIDS ravages the gay community Renata can see ghosts, except for one - her best friend Mark. It’s a fabulous book, full of grief & loss & longing but also full of humour & life. A startling debut - out next month.
My 18th read of the year was this fascinating, exhaustive history of Live Aid. I learnt a lot & really enjoyed it. Recommended. Out now from @newmodernbooks.bsky.social @peteselby.bsky.social
