The SSPX could do so, so much good inside the Church. The fact that CANONICAL Latin Mass fraternities exist is proof enough to me. But in the "tradition" they prop up as an idol, they have gotten addicted to their own incense. They reap the whirlwind. God bless.
I think that ultimately the Latin Mass has become a hotbed for political firebrands and demagogues. The Church is right to have restricted it under the late Francis. The SSPX are inconsistent. They are Protestants in all but name, though I grant that those are at least consistent.
...They believe they are bound by their conscience to arbitrarily choose when to obey the Holy Father and when not to. Their namesake comes from Pope St. Pius X, a Pre-Vatican II pope.
The hypocrisy, dear secular leader, lies in the SSPX's "tradition" -As quote Catholics unquote, they view the Pope as the supreme head of the Church 2nd to Christ Himself -they affirm Papal Infallibility (Vatican I) BUT -They view the Papacy right now as heretical -VatII is heretical Ergo...
Careful readers should be able to plainly note the cycle: -SSPX announces illegal consecrations -Rome tells them not to do that -SSPX does it -SSPX gets excommunicated -SSPX bitches and whines, plays the victim. as of Jul 1, 2026, we're seeing it play out again before our very eyes.
The "state of Crisis" in question not necessarily being of the SSPX's leadership growing old and needing to consecrate a new generation: Bp. Fellate (ptoo) claimed the Crisis was in Rome: -Rome's "endorsement" of LGBT (whoa being nice to gay people?!) -"Modernism" -Same old anti-VatII playbook.
The Holy Father warned the SSPX to please turn back--similar to JP2, urging dialogue with Rome and warning about the excommunication that would fall upon them again if they proceeded. Bp. Fellay (or "Fellate" as i call him) claimed the ordinations were due to a "State of crisis"...[next]
but just like Lefebvre, the Bishops he illicitly consecrated in 1988 got old. They announced a few months back that they'd be consecrating four new bishops. Same playbook. Same victim complex. Same disregarding of the approved channels. How did Pope Leo react?
This grey area is where the SSPX and Rome remained until yesterday The SSPX, despite its noncanonical status and hotbed for the Worst People You Know, continued to grow. In the USA alone they boast over 100 priories and operate in over 30 countries. They remain a voice in the Latin Mass movement
The demands of the SSPX were still there and not budging. They included, similarly to Lefebvre's ranting: -Rollback of certain VatII promulgations -You guessed it: Denounce Jews, protestants, sep. of church and state, etc -More autonomy. -More bishops. Rome, understandably, didn't grant these.
This functionally meant that you were still not "allowed" to attend any SSPX parish/chapel unless you had no other options. Bishop Fellay took the late Pope B16's goodwill gesture and promptly did very, very little for dialogue. If anything, /he/ wanted /concessions/ from Rome.
HOWEVER The lifting of the excommunication did not magically make the SSPX and Rome hunky-dory. They were still "illicit" because of their schism. If they wanted to be fully canonical like FSSP/ICKSP, they would need to recant what Abp Lefebvre claimed, especially that VatII taught heresy.
So, now we can hopefully contextualize the motivation behind Pope Benedict XVI (one of the smartest people of the 20th century btw) to try and help the SSPX reconcile with Rome. The growing need for a more ancient and traditional form of worship was clear to him.
Others include the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICKSP). These are in 100% good standing with the Pope, and any Catholic can freely attend the Latin mass they offer. I myself regularly go to the Canons Regular of John Cantius in Chicago, though I attend their Novus Ordo.
By this time, the "traditionalist movement" influenced directly/indirectly by the SSPX was growing. More fraternal orders who celebrated the Latin Mass were appearing, such as but not limited to the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter (FSSP) formed by former SSPX priests who rejoined Rome after 1988.
Still, the excommunication remained and Lefebvre would repose outside the Church in 1991. The four Bishops would remain excommunicated, and their Sacraments illicit (you can only receive them if they're the only ones around who can perform them) (think of it as a liturgical soft block)
