Indeclaring his long-shot challenge to
George Bush for the Republican presidential nomination, conservative columnist Pat Buchanan toned down some of his reactionary ideas. But he retained enough traces of xenophobia to sound like a flashback from the isolationist 1930s.
Launching his campaign in New Hampshire, where the first 1992 presidential primary is only nine weeks away, Buchanan demanded no less than America's retreat from the world at flank speed.

Buchanan frame his differences with Bush in only 41 words: "He is a globalist and we are nationalists. He believes in some Pax Universalis; we believe in the old Republic. He would put America's wealth and power at the service of some vague New World Order; we will put America first." Buchanan believes that the U.S. has no business promoting democracy abroad now that the cold war is history. He wants to end direct foreign aid and curtail U.S. participation in the World Bank. As for my political elimination, it was the group led by [Ukrainian lawmaker and Putin ally] Medvedchuk, the father of the Russian leader's goddaughter. They found a political means of elimination. There was a lot of propaganda in local elections. The weakening of local governments. This was one of the main reasons after my victory in the presidential election and the victory of my party—the party, today, of the majority [in Parliament.] Basically, they understood that the Russian authorities were losing their strong—and I'd say quite strong—influence on Ukrainian politics.
They had influence, and it was fairly powerful. So they chose a different tactic—winning in the regions.
Why? Because what's happening in the regions? I don't know what it's like for you all—I don't fully understand it—so correct me if I'm wrong... But what did we have?
We've had a majority system in our parliamentary elections on the ground for a long time. And we also had, as a rule, various groups—financial and political groups. I'll put it this way, they were career politicians who exerted influence over local law enforcement agencies, over politics, over everything.
In that case, you can win [on a national level] and control—in the normal, democratic meaning of the word—the central authorities; have the powers that the people gave you in legitimate, fair elections. But on the local level, you can't solve anything. You can do reforms that just never quite get there. It's like a political colander. It seems like you've arrived, you have a bunch of ideas, ambitions, a huge amount of energy and fairly young people—I don't mean their experience, I mean a team of people with young, bright heads on their shoulders... But you can't reach the regions, because everything there is just blocked.
That's why they chose that tactic. They ended up with a lot of influence regionally.

In May, President Zelensky, despite deadlocked negotiations, reiterated that the war "will only definitively end through diplomacy," and had previously explained that "any mentally healthy person always chooses the diplomatic path, because he or she knows: even if it is difficult, it can prevent the loss of thousands, tens of thousands...and maybe even millions of lives."
In conclusion, we urge you to make vigorous diplomatic efforts in support of a negotiated settlement and ceasefire, engage in direct talks with Russia, explore prospects for a new European security arrangement acceptable to all parties that will allow for a sovereign and independent Ukraine, and, in coordination with our Ukrainian partners, seck a rapid end to the conflict and reiterate this goal as America's chief priority.
