KOYAANISQATSI (1982, Reggio): So happy to have finally watched this. Nothing like being confronted with the sheer overwhelming beauty of our planet in a single cinematic microcosm. Philip Glass's score is incredible and may be the best ever, but of course you already knew this.
Missed the anniversary by nearly three weeks but I’ve been living in LA for 15 years now. Here’s a photo I took of Levitated Mass:
MEN FROM THE GUTTER (1983): A Shaw Bros production of a Lam Nai-Choi film ticks a lot of boxes, but this still delivers plenty of thrilling chases and bloody action from seedy characters, as well as a stunt-heavy climax that looks and feels palpably dangerous (aka the best kind).
Toshiro Mifune, Charles Bronson, Alain Delon, Ursula Andress, directed by Terence Young. If there’s a more Me Movie out there that I have not seen I haven’t heard of it. Now watching:
Just watched Godzilla vs. Hedorah at Vidiots with Dalton. Really some of the most beautiful images ever caught on film.
DIRTY HO (1979, Lau Kar-leung): Two men of disparate backgrounds team up to become a singular force of nature in arguably the greatest martial arts film of all time. Relentlessly dazzling and balletic, capped off by the most amazing freeze frame ending in cinema history.
Feels like I’ve owned a copy of this for far too long to have never seen it. Rectifying that now. Dalton’s joining me.
Our shining light is gone. We had to say goodbye to our Golden Girl today. We rescued Zoe ten years ago and she went on to become the greatest family dog you could ever hope for. Our hearts are torn in two but we will never forget her. We love you, Zoe.
TORNADO (2025): I’d count Slow West as one of my favorite films of the last ~ten years, so I was pleased to find that Maclean’s long-awaited follow-up delivers plenty more beautiful, violent, idiosyncratic east-meets-western greatness. Let’s hope his next film arrives sooner.
