Nora’s incision is all closed up, scab has come off, and we’re headed to the beach this long weekend to celebrate! Photo from our last beach day before her tumour removal.

Yeah it’s bad. It’s bumpy grass with mixed in gravel. There was no clear path or signage from parking to the beach, which is behind the pool, so I wasn’t even sure I was in the right place! Not ideal to navigate even able bodied

Nora is cancer free 😭❤️ Margins were tight in a few small areas so they need to be monitored closely for the next year but lump removal was otherwise curative! 🎉🎉🎉

Nora is healing wonderfully. Taking her meds like a champ, not scratching at her incision. It doesn’t seem to bother her at all! Staples out on the 18th. Pet insurance claim approved. She’s feeling like herself. Just waiting on the phone call with pathology results!

Dropping her off for surgery first thing tomorrow morning. Took her out for an epic beach adventure yesterday! Dead fish rolled on, many holes dug, dunes climbed, seagulls chased, water waded in.

The location of Nora’s lump is a bit awkward (back of head/high neck) and a cone/donut situation might not work for keeping the wound protected, so we may need to improvise.

Nora had a suspicious lump checked out today. Vet was unable to diagnose in house and sent it to a path lab. His demeanour when examining it didn’t exactly inspire confidence. Please keep her in your thoughts!

Last year, the air quality on the Friday (July 11th) of @winnipegfolkfest.bsky.social was apocalyptic. Healthy range is 10-20. They had absolutely no masks available. I emailed them yesterday, asking if they were prepared with masks for this year. They will not be providing them.

Seeking to take pressure off front-line officers and improve response times, the Winnipeg Police Service will launch a rapid response unit next month.

The unit will specialize in policing events such as parades, protests, rallies and other large public gatherings, the WPS said in a Thursday news release. It will also assist officers when needed, conduct proactive enforcement and address neighbourhood safety concerns.

The unit will be staffed by two sergeants, four patrol sergeants and 26 constables.

It will debut at Sunday's WPS half marathon.

The idea of banning social media for youth might sound like a quick fix. Social media does have real harms, and those concerns shouldn’t be dismissed.

But taking social media away from young people isn’t going to suddenly send them outside to play with their friends, because there’s really nowhere for them to go.

Not that long ago, young people could spend evenings in school fields hanging out, ride their bikes after dark, and just exist in public without much interference. As a millennial, these experiences defined much of my adolescence. Now, between CCTV, neighbourhood camera systems (subsidized by the government) and location sharing, kids can’t be out in public without the risk of being tracked, reported, confronted, or labelled suspicious simply for existing in public.

possible. Community centres, youth programming, and shared spaces have taken a back seat to spending on roads, cars, policing, and private development. The amount of time kids spend on their phones is a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself.

A social media ban for youth would also hit some young people harder than others. Queer and disabled youth, in particular, often rely on online spaces to find connection, support, and community. These connections are essential to their well-being.

It is unfortunately not uncommon for youth, of all walks of life, to lack safe and supportive people in their offline lives. Online spaces are often the only place where they can access information, find understanding, and feel less alone. Limiting youth access to social media is, in practice, limiting their access to information and to ways of understanding the world around them.

A blanket ban shifts the burden onto young people without changing the conditions that pushed them online in the first place. If we actually want young people to spend less time online, we must invest in the conditions that make offline life safe, accessible, and worth showing up for.

Letter to the editor in today's Winnipeg Free Press. Natalie is right: what's the point in having a summit on student absenteeism without input from families? It's such a paternalistic and saviour complex way of approaching the issue.

Re: Summit to explore solutions to chronic truancy (April 21)

It is encouraging that school absenteeism is being discussed and I agree that there are many contributing factors.

First, it’s important that existing recommendations from recent reports are not forgotten. The Manitoba Human Rights Commission Right to Read report recently noted that learning disabilities which are not identified and accommodated lead to absenteeism. This finding is consistent with research from other education systems.

I regularly hear from parents whose children’s psycho-educational assessment and student specific plan is essentially ignored and school refusal has already set in. Second, parents are important partners in education. Unfortunately, in many school divisions parents are not offered even one opportunity in an entire school year to be invited to speak with their child’s teacher without the child present. Parents must request it.

So, I suppose it shouldn’t be surprising that parents from Winnipeg School Division are not listed as being invited to the student absenteeism summit. It’s a missed opportunity and an attitude that likely contributes to absenteeism.

I feel like people are glossing over the “partial human remains” aspect of Leah Keeper’s remains being found in a back lane. This is exactly how Rebecca Contois, one of convicted serial killer Jeremy Skibicki’s victims, was found. Partial remains in a back lane. cbc.ca/9.7160767
