A look at Air and Ground forces of the Midway Garrison during the Battle of Midway. Picking unit identifiers for the aviation units was not easy and probably not even correctly done by me. This is an improved version of an earlier work I did on just the 6th Marine Defense Battalion. #ORBATBoys
Kaiser Canyon Fire is I believe the largest fire we have seen in at least 2 or 3 years if not longer. It is at this point almost certainly at 120,000 acres or more.
Additionally, Adm Hart of the Asiatic Fleet earlier in 1941 chose to dissolve the Cavite Marine Barracks and rebrand them as 1st Sep Marine Bn with a dual infantry/AA defense purpose. They would later absorb the replacements intended for the 4th Marines to fill the Bn out to ~725 Marines. 3/
When they arrived, they were vastly understrength with only 2x battalions each with 2x rifle companies of 2x platoons as they were allowed to attrition in the lead-up to the Pearl Harbor attack. By their arrival, they were made up of roughly 800 marines + Navy medical personnel. 2/
The 4th Marines! China Marines! The image below depicts how the 4th Marine Regiment was more or less organized at the start of the Battle of Corregidor in May 1942 and highlights their quirky structure. The 4th Marines arrived in the Philippines from China less than 2 weeks before Pearl Harbor 1/
I've done another one folks. This time on the 9th Marine Defense Battalion which would see a lot of action in the New Georgia Campaign in 1943. #ORBATBoys
Happy "1st Minnesota saves the Union line" Day to all who celebrate. Forever proud of the bravery displayed on this day by my Great Great Grandfather and his fellow Minnesotans in stopping the Confederates.
This is the message on a car I found parked in front of my house just now.
1st Marine Defense Battalion disposition as of Dec 7th, 1941. This battalion was laid out across four Pacific Islands in the lead up to the Attack on Pearl Harbor with about half the unit on Wake Island. One of my favorite all-time units and huge credit again to Marshall Snyder's book. #ORBATBoys
First in awhile, but the USMC Airdrome Battalion was a shortlived unit based on the Marine Defense Battalion but without the Coast Artillery Group. Their ultimate mission would be to protect airfields inland and in particular those in the China-Burma Theater before the airfields were overran.
Took this picture a bit after being notified earlier. The helo to the right is a black hawk from Yakima training center heading to the scene.
Also speaking of baseball. Some Rainiers action with Cal Raleigh on rehab.
Flying in a Cessna for the first time today while on State business was glorious.
Ive seen a family of deer in my near downtown olympia neighborhood multiple times! Reminds me of Port Townsend.
How can you sit there with a straight face and tell me this is only a 102 win team.
