A beautiful thing about the last few days has been the sky - truly dramatic clouds all stacked like stiff whipped cream and light so saturated with colour it tastes pink . #SomethingBeautiful

A photos of the sky in a thin white border, The image has a lot of texture and grain, adding a concrete reality to the impossibility of the image - a blue sky tinted a bit green with incoming storm light, casting deep shadows across a tall white fluffy clouds. There are so many different kinds of clouds in this photo, the fluffy stacked one fills the center, but behind it are lacy whisps and frothy lines like the edge of a broken wave. The sky and clouds in the image look so big, the central cloud like a mountain made of light.

A sunset image of West Toronto inside a white border, the stark whiteness of the border shows how creamy soft the colors are. The sky fills most of the image, a wall of cottony rolling storm clouds holding so much sunset they are heavy with purple and pink and orange. A very tall street lamp casts a bright orange spot to the right But the most beautiful juicy light fills the left hand side as the sunset reflects off the small buildings at the bottom of the image, lighting them like torches.

About a year ago I saw "Museum" by Margaux Williamson and it changed my life a little . I even wrote a blog post about it . laurenjanek.com/post/crying-in-the-moca

Painting museum 2025 on a wall in the museum which the painting is of. The painting is hyper-immersive, a thematic retrospective on the space and time, blending classical techniques with with vibrant display of modern structure and narrative. The painting is mostly grey and includes the MOCA's iconic pillars and cement construction. A display box glows brightly and the cement looks more like Monet's Water Lilies: full of depth, colour, and light. Even though the canvas is flat, there's a powerful illusion of depth.

we are submerged in heat and I stay awake to see the new moon. We talk in bed, holding hands, using the verbs fuck and run and lack and infinity and somewhere... no infinity is not a verb but sometimes it feels like one

An anonymous portrait in pale warm colors and cold blue light, of a person whose face you can not see. You cannot see the face but the photo is nonetheless intimate, they look dewy with sweat.

Their coppery brown hair is tangled and falling down the shoulders of a feminine person who is wearing several layers of lingerie. All the sheer piled on top of each other, lace stacked and staggered so its opaque. They lift one hand - all you can see are elegantly shaped fingers gently pressing in the gap between their breasts as though feeling their own heartbeat.

You can only see the lower part of their jaw. Their mouth is open tongue exposed, they look as though they are panting in the heat. Wrapped around their tongue as a strand of hair sticky with spit and sweat. The hair is pinned in place with a clothespin.

the funny thing about life is painful things you're sure you cant forget & the heart-stopping joys, all of it, is splintered & scattered into something else. Memories replaced by larger joys & sweeter sorrows, until one day you wake up and you're positive this is all you ever wanted in the world...

A warm image. Lots of grain and soft light light with so much texture, you could chew it. The hips, stomach and thighs of a feminine person, demuirally and modestly posed - their body is wrapped in homemade strands of rope, loops of wool and twine and embroidery thread, pale Grays and soft pinks, ivory soft as petals, all woven together soft pillowy.

( I am very slowly working on making a set of rope by hand out of different types of textiles and wool - this was a test shot to see how it looks. If I ever get home again I'd like to make enough to do full body tie with it ).

Seeing these images only in black and white tricks us into thinking these events were long ago, already old history we don't attach to our everyday lives. But Malcolm x shared time with the Beatles. The civil rights movement isn't ancient history, it's not even over - it's all still happening today

Angela Davis in 1974, and John Lewis in 1964 in colorized images from the Smithsonian. Seeing these people in color, their hair and their clothes the undertones in their skin - these things make them human and make them come alive

Post Juneteenth post to say it's weird to me that we only see photos of the Civil Rights Movement in black and white, when they share history with the 60's - a time when colour photography was so prevalent it was booming. Here are some photos of Civil Rights movement in colour

A block from a King rally in 1960, white photographer Bernard Kleina caught white agitators vandalizing the car of a Black family.

King at the August 1966 Marquette Park demonstration. I find this photo particularly interesting. The people in it, the fashion, the facial expressions. This could have been yesterday..

A photo by jordan J. Lloyd taken in 1963 of a multiracial rally where of a quarter of a million people marched peacefully on Washington to highlight racial injustices and put pressure on Congress to pass a civil-rights bill proposed by President John F Kennedy.

Rosa Parks speaking at the multiracial rally mentioned in the previous photo, in 1963. Seeing her in colour is powerful - seeing the texture of her hair and the pattern of her dress, seeing the modern look of her fashion and her sunglasses, even the technology of the mics, looks more recent when shown in colour. Seeing her in color makes her look like someone you could know, someone you might talk to at the sandwich shop while waiting for a lemonade ( I just drank a lemonade so it's on my mind. It was good)

The poem "kindness"

and what do we have? Bauhaus architecture and abstract expressionism. French New Wave cinema, Beat poetry, Photo Editing Apps, one thousand different kinds of plastic and expensive microbes that can eat .03% of it. You might understand this to mean a finite set of symbolic propositions is the same as beautiful, the same as kindness, like a nocturnal atlas moth knowing direction from the light of the moon. But that fact that little splinter of beauty cut into reality does nothing to keep them form the endangered species list. The moths die anyway. We all die anyway. Kindness is the only way forward.

Something beautiful about the last few days has been dramatic skies, blooming flowers, and seeing fireflies for the first time in maybe 30 years. I'm taking it as a sign of hope . #SomethingBeautiful

The light is purple and makes all the wildflowers look Ike they are made of velvet, hay flowers and cosmos and reaching red gladiolus. Wild flowers fill the image, focus sliding to the center on a spray of blue blossoms, tangled in the view of out of focus buttery blooming, in rich evening light.

A huge dramatic sky full of evening light, 50 shades of purple, from black plum to pale lilac, paint the sky with massive sculpted clouds stacked and staggered like castle walls filling the view, making the black silhouettes of towering trees seem small.

And everything is blushed and flushed and pink, from water to skin - a body floating in bathwater the colour of strawberry cotton candy the same color as flushed pale skin so pink it looks warm as the bathwater. Round thigh and little sell of ass emerge from the water, as though the body and the water are made of the same light and colour...

But nothing else is - their bra lifts but exposes their breasts, their patent leather nylons expose their ass reflect in the mirror. All things are seen, except their face. their face is turned away so you can not see it or see its reflection, as though they have turned away from everything.

I chose these two books because I really wanted to read a book of poetry. I like to do this thing where I sit down and read a whole book of poetry and one long swallow usually ends up making me feel a little bit drunk. I chose these two books specifically because of the titles.

I am something beautiful but dangerous - & that's what dangerous means something beautiful that can hurt you .

It's hard to explain where anything comes from. You look at the ocean, where does all this water come from? It is impossible to say. You look at this photo, all warm light and soft tones, and where do all the pearls come from? What about all the hands? The photo is of a body turning away from the camera, a slim torso, breasts exposed, dressed in an ivory body suit, their waist wrapped in elastic and woven with many pearls, pearls falling down their body, swaying around their hips. Three hands appear from nowhere; it could be their own hands, but there are too many. Three hands brush their chest, pull the abodysuit strap, twirl the strand of pearls, trying to take everything off....
