You can’t answer the question “What is UVA?” without reference to this

I stood next to a young person in a wheelchair. And some point I looked down and saw liquid splashing on them, and then the fascists started throwing lit torches at us, in full view of the U-Va. police, and behind them, the Charlottesville police. No one stopped them. This was all done in full view of the police.

There is the now famous picture of Cantwell unloading a canister of mace into a kid. This too happened in full view of the U-Va. Police.

Tomorrow the city of Charlottesville will look to approve $4 million towards homeless services, including emergency shelter and housing supports.

Resolution to Appropriate $4,000,000 from the Capital Improvement Program
Contingency Fund to be used for Homeless Intervention Services to include Emergency
Sheltering and Direct to Housing Supports.
WHEREAS per the City of Charlottesville's financial policy, year-end surpluses from the City's General Fund are transferred to the CIP contingency Fund where they accumulate until appropriated by the City Council for expenditure; and
WHEREAS the City Manager has made a recommendation and request to allocate a portion of the contingency funds to address one-time expenditures that have not previously been appropriated; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia, that the sum of $4,000,000 is hereby allocated from currently appropriated funds in the CIP Contingency Fund to be used for homeless intervention services to include emergency sheltering and direct to housing supports.:

I started reading “Streetfight” by @jskstreet.bsky.social, former NYC transportation commissioner. I’m really excited about this book. “To plan is human, to implement, divine” is a line I’ll be using on repeat. Implementation is everything.

Every community has excuses for why changing the way they use their streets is impossible, impractical, or just insane. I learned firsthand that there is no end to the reasons for inaction. But inaction is in-excusable. As our cities grow, leaders and the people they serve cannot accept dysfunctional streets; they must fight to change them. The fight for these changes-well, that's just part of the job.

More than policy or ideas themselves, the most valuable lessons for any city involve the on-the-ground, practical experience of connecting vision to plans and then executing projects that produce positive change. Pinned above my desk during my six and a half years as commissioner was an adage from Harvard urban planning and design professor Jerold Kayden: "To plan is human, to implement, divine."

Very much worth noting that the Charlottesville Middle School project is coming in $3 million under budget. Great work all around!

The possibility of additional funding comes at a time when Charlottesville City Schools are preparing for sixth grade students to what used to be called Buford Middle School this August.
The school has been renovated and expanded at a cost of about $91 million.
Mike Goddard, Deputy Director of Public Works, is part of a working group on school facilities that consists of members of his department, the Office of Sustainability, the budget office, and representatives from Charlottesville City Schools.
"This project is finished [and] it's got a Certificate of Occupancy now, so it is substantially complete in our parlance," Goddard said. "It was a $94 million commitment, more or less. And so that's of the big, big items in our funding picture."
Goddard said that leaves about $3 million in approved funding that can be transferred to another project. One of those projects might be the Early Learning Center proposed at the

A couple of my kids are doing a Cville Track Club activity this evening at the CHS track. And the football team is practicing simultaneously. This track is so nice (and has lights now!). A great example of how investing in infrastructure is an investment in ourselves

The city can’t get any of its significant sidewalk projects even started, much less completed. But it did find almost $1 million and a staff time to make sure cars can continue to drive the downtown mall, despite there being no safety benefits.
