Looking forward to sharing my nursing history research at the Australasian Military Medicine conference in Sydney later in the year. I’ll be presenting on the impact of service & links to early death for nurses 2026.amma.asn.au #research #nursing #HistNursing @milwelfhist.bsky.social
Some great images from a YMCA book for the NZEF - copy held in Auckland museum - not sure yet who nurses area #ww1 #HistNursing
I have decide to start using Substack to put some of my writing about war nurses - today I’ve started on the mysterious autograph book. If this is of interest please follow me there - I’m trialling Google lens to help with translation #HistNursing
Never let it be said that nurses aren’t prepared to give up own comforts for the greater good- here nurses in NZ give up Han, cake, fruit & scones for war effort paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/A...
1/2 Have some time for more #HistNursing Research & cane across some great snippets in the news papers. The 1st one very early in WW1 - 2 NZ nurses challenged by German Soldiers in Brussels paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/G...
Lemnos is a Greek island in the Aegean & was a key hospital site in WW1 dealing with the wounded from Gallipoli as portrayed in the TV programme Anzac Girls. This is a medical kit from the museum on Portiano- Moudros harbour was full of blood, dead horses/mules & hospital ships -📸 mine 1918
Precious moments with these precious volumes. I own volume 2 paid a fortune thanks to a recommendation and to see the other 2 was very special
History always gives us something new to learn & a recent visit to the Auckland War Memorial museum gave me an opportunity to learn about the Ngapuhi nursing sisters in 1900. Determined Wahine ( women) www.aucklandmuseum.com/discover/sto...
On this wet winter solstice I am working on the British WW1 nurse diary that links UK, France, Westcoast, Otaki & Palmerston North until it came to be in a collection in a Christchurch book shop. 😁I may be calling on history friends to help. Perfect listening to @oldfrontline.bsky.social
#HistNursing refound this in my collection- 1945 with great spread about NZANS in action. These journal are available digitally at Papers Past
Now winter is coming it’s time to unravel the mysteries in the ww1 nurse diary I bought. She was British, worked in France & married a kiwi the intrigue for me is she live in the tiny town I grew up, & buried next to house I lived in Palmy North. I think I’ll make a blog. 🇬🇧🇫🇷🇳🇿
Loved logging into the @thegreatwargroup.bsky.social online conference overnight - a great line up of speakers with huge range of topics. 🙏
A very nice Anzac Day- weather was great, packed turnout for the Service at the Nurses’ Memorial Chapel. I shared more about my research into early deaths #HistNursing
Today I visited the West Coast for work and squeezed in a visit to the tiny, historic Cemetery of Kumara where 2 WW1 nurses are commemorated. They lost their lives on The Marquette in 1915 -placed a poppy as it’s Anzac Day soon on 25 April
Lovely graduation today celebrating our Grad entry Master Health Science Nursing > 50 walked across the stage www.odt.co.nz/star-news/st...
Anzac Day is fast approaching and I’m honoured to be giving the Anzac Day address at the Christchurch Nurses Memorial Chapel service honouring our past nurses #HistNursing
It was super fab to catch up with the wonderful 🇳🇿historian @moffski.bsky.social who is now based in Manchester- amazing research, do check out her work on Scottish women’s history +more!
1 thing I love about social media is connecting with other’s interests like @ninabake2.bsky.social - not my field but it makes me stop & notice things like the role of women in engineering - today at the Science & technology museum in Manchester 🙂 always learning 🔌⚡️
A nice visit to the Peoples History Museum in Manchester - free entry, can donate. @partizandulwich.bsky.social
Yes very poor- the ones at St Mary’s church also terrible
I finally got to pay my respects to a special NZANS in Tidworth Military Cemetery- the only female from WW1- she died of influenza on the ‘death ship’ Tahiti, the captain thought nurses were frivolous. Her story is here nzhistory.govt.nz/media/photo/es… - almost couldn’t read headstone #HistNursing
Beyond happy today in london letting our feet take us where ever & happened across the John Snow Pub at the site of the water pump, where Dr Snow discovered the Soho cholera outbreak stated #medhistory livinglondonhistory.com/the-story-of...
Thrilled to be contacted by another family member of Sister Mabel Crook , subject of my book. They have this brass walking she night in Egypt. I think she mentions it in her diary . How wonderful to correspond with them 🙏
Family grief & trauma for this 🇳🇿Westcoast family. Helena drowned on the Marquette, probably the unmade nurse buried in Thessaloniki, Charles killed 04/17 & Isabel killed her 1929 consumed by grief 😢😢😢😢 this next piece of research heartbreaking
TW #suicide Just submitted my missive of early #nurse deaths and WW1- straight on the next - not a cheery topic either. Early newspaper reports certainly don’t hold back with descriptions ! 1912 #HistNursing
Friday tends to be my allocated research day & I thought I’d share a shot of my screens - all the excel tabs relate to the thousands of bits of data I’ve collated on my WW1 nurses & putting finishing touches to my next key article #HistNursing
NZANS Margaret Thompson died 1921 from TB contracted during her short service. She battled for pension payments & suitable care. Sadly she died before she could be in a sanatorium but had treatment at home at her request. She’s buried around the corner from me. May she RIP. I often say hi to her😢🇳🇿
