Pretty good day so far. Got my seeing hearing aid this morning, and now I have a reader card for the British Library.
I happened to keep my pieces from Risk Legacy as parts for game design. Turns out they’re the perfect size for @zhuindustries.bsky.social Zone Trooper!
Fellow game devs! Arts Emergency (@artsemergency.bsky.social, a UK-based organisation) needs volunteers working in arts and culture to mentor a young person in 2027! Deadline is 4 Sept. Here's the link to register! www.arts-emergency.org/get-involved...
It's the Pugsteady newsletter! Skipping any preamble, this week is all about Realms of Pugmire news, other Pugsteady updates, and discussing the nonfiction book "All of the Marvels." buttondown.com/pugsteady/ar...
Who Is Aldrich Kemp: "In a world of yachts, private planes and underground bases a question echoes - Who Is Aldrich Kemp? Exciting new drama from Julian Simpson."
Siege: "You've seen the news, the blogs, and the pics. Now the hostages tell the inside story."
Steelheads: "A futuristic thriller starring Jessica Barden as a tennis pro who awakes from cryogenic sleep to find a world in chaos."
Harland: "Lucy Catherine's 5 part supernatural thriller set in the new town of Harland, built on the site of a village abandoned 900 years earlier. DI Sarah Ward returns to work to investigate the disappearance of a child."
I love full-cast audio drama, so I've been tempted by Limelight, a podcast compiling Radio 4 dramas with a slant to sci-fi and thriller. Each story is a trailer plus five 30-minute episodes, with some getting more than one season. But after five years, it's a lot to listen to.
The newest #RealmsofPugmire book is out, a player's guide called PUGMIRE UNLEASHED. www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/5...
After a great session zero, I now get to start building out a new Marvel Multiversal RPG campaign for my friends. It'll be based in London, using bits and bobs from Excalibur, MI-13, and Marvel UK comics.
Supergirl as a Red Lantern is not a direction I expected, but it works really well.
She's also ANGRY, and for very good reasons. She has terrible luck, gets treated like dirt by the universe, and her only friend is an Irish punk possessed by a ghost (like you do). I did not expect a Kryptonian to have Peter Parker luck, and I really dig it.
Now I'm in the middle of the New 52 run, and it is deep in what I think of as "Krypton Bullocks." But I actually dig it because the first 20 issues make Kara genuinely alien in a way I haven't seen in the previous runs. She doesn't even speak English for over a year of comics.
Again, a bit of jumping in the middle of things (apparently her origin was actually back in a Batman/Superman comic), but there was a neat run where she cycles through the main team staples (the Outsiders, Teen Titans, JSA, JLA, etc.) so it ended up being a nice tour of pre-52 DC.
I moved onto the Geoff Loeb reboot that brings Kara back, and it was more what I initially expected, but I admit after the religious/folk horror weirdness of the previous run, the hard shift to a more traditional comic book was surprisingly jarring.
Reading comics in the 80s trained me to just deal with diving in the middle of continuity, and I got the hang of it, but it all felt like Peter David was watching the Vertigo teams and decided to see how much of that vibe he could cram into Supergirl. Which I liked, but did not expect.
I started with the 90s Peter David era, because I like Peter David's comics. And holy hell it's the deep end. Apparently Supergirl is someone called Matrix who is a shapeshifting creature, but that's fine because she eventually becomes an angel with wings of fire.
I have been reading a lot of Supergirl lately, as someone who have never knowingly read a Supergirl comic before. Here's how it's going so far.
New phone has arrived. The usual several hours of installing apps and finding passwords has happened, but it is really exciting to have my hearing aids just work with the phone. There’s even a couple options that I haven’t had before!
