In fact, this study seems even worse than the news reports suggest. 1) they only study people being scanned for chest pain, which may introduce distorting selection bias 2) They appear to have gone fishing, testing 28 different body composition measures and focussing on the significant ones.

Yeah. The problem is people disingenuously claiming their study is "just descriptive" to avoid having to think about causal assumptions when their true aims and their conclusions are clearly causal! See also "it's just an association", "it's just exploratory", etc etc
Had an incredible time visiting @dbei-upenn.bsky.social in Philadelphia! Another department where causal inference is literally in/on the walls. During a 30 minute sit down, I overheard a debate about selection bias and within minutes people were drawing DAGs on the walls!
Couldn't resist going for a Philly Cheesesteak. Albeit a spicy fusion variant, marketed as Cheesesteak 2.0. It was... Really good!

Today I learnt that (unspaced) em-dashes are encouraged by the Chicago Manual of Style (American English) but discouraged by the University of Oxford Style Guide (British English), which recommends using spaced en dashes instead - see pic from www.antarcticglaciers.org/wp-content/u...

Best of all, the authors cite completely the wrong paper. Bland & Altman 2003 says nothing whatsoever about agreement & does not introduce the Bland Altman Plot / Limits of agreement method. This, ladies & gentleman, is the quality of scholarship in one of the world's top medical journal! 5/5 🧵
2) the study reports that "93.8% of pairs fall within the 95% limits of agreement". This is a tautology. The 95% limits of agreement should by definition include 95% of values. Bland & Altman recommend checking this to check for assumption violations. Not as a result in its own right! 4/5 🧵
