On this final page, the tolling bell & fall into silence seem to elide with the Christmas 1945 fly leaf inscription, evoking the distant orison of church bells pealing into the reverent hush of Christmas morning, a time in any given year when human absences are especially loud, let alone in that one

Today’s find: a junior grimoire in which a series of model village Midsummer Murders, Potter’s museum-esque taxidermy tableaux illustrate Who Killed Cock Robin. The faded inscription & faint fingerprints a touching sort of haunting: soft, pale traces of a gift given just after war, a book well loved

Many of her works depict scenes from her materially affluent home life, often devoid of people, with eeriness & emptiness troubling under the surface of comfortable surroundings

I got about fifteen minutes into quite studiously trying to draw a dead ortolan bunting before snapping, melting pencils led me to throw the titty lip & have, what I thought of, as very Ubu Roi tantrum. I was about to abandon it but let it become its own silly scribbly, quite cathartic thing instead
