Rep. Summer Lee
@repsummerlee
Representing the People of PA’s 12th Congressional District. PA’s first Black US Congresswoman. Breaking cement ceilings. She/her. Committees: Judiciary and Education & Workforce.
DHS has received billions while agents violate constitutional rights and murder people with little to no accountability. Abolishing ICE means dismantling the agency enabling its reign of terror and reimaging what safety and security actually looks like.
Celebrating an incredible summer with our interns! Hunter, Minhul, and Alexa, it was a privilege to have you with us. We’re grateful for your hard work and commitment to public service and can’t wait to see all you accomplish next.
Loved welcoming a local Girl Scout troop from Mt. Lebanon to our DC office this week. It was a privilege to hear from the next generation of young leaders, learn what matters most to them, and talk about their hopes for the future. The future is in good hands. 💚
Borders should not determine someone's humanity. Regardless of Republicans' lies, the facts are the same. These ICE facilities are inhumane, dangerous, and a cruel punishment for people simply wanting a better life for their family.
Modern healthcare was built on the exploitation of Black bodies, from nonconsensual experiments on enslaved women to the theft of Henrietta Lacks’ cells. Now, Republicans call efforts to level the playing field “DEI” instead of addressing the inequities they helped create.
.Organized labor has always been one of the greatest strongholds for democracy in our country. I was grateful to meet with my constituents from @steelworkers.bsky.social to talk about the work ahead and how we can continue standing together for workers' rights.
An educated public is harder to control. That’s why Republicans are attacking public education, dismantling the Dept. of Education, & abandoning the young people our future depends on. Dismantling education isn’t a byproduct of authoritarianism. It’s a prerequisite for it.
No one should have to ration medicine or walk away from the pharmacy counter because of cost. But more than 1 in 4 Pennsylvanians have. That’s why I’m proud to co-lead the Drug Deal Disclosure Act with @chu.house.gov to force transparency around Trump’s secret drug pricing deals.
Three ICE-related deaths in just a week. There is no reforming a system built to terrorize immigrant communities. Abolish ICE.
We have a healthcare system where Black patients are too often ignored, misdiagnosed, and denied care. Black doctors save lives. Culturally competent care saves lives. We can't afford to lose that just because conservatives are uncomfortable with diversity.
Black lives and Black futures are constantly under attack by white supremacy. For years, the government has enabled and sanctioned systemic disenfranchisement. We cannot celebrate freedom while refusing to confront the systems that deny it to so many.
Somehow there's always money to expand the Pentagon and bankroll Israel's assault on Gaza. But when it comes to healthcare, education, or helping working people, we're told there's nothing left. America's priorities are failing people here and abroad.
We always seem to have billions for war, bombs, and endless militarization. But when it comes to healthcare, Social Security, housing, or feeding kids, suddenly we're told there's no money. That's a political choice.
Violence prevention starts with investing in our communities and the people doing the work every day. Grateful to meet with the Greater Valley Coalition for Peace & Justice to hear updates on their work and discuss how we can continue building safer neighborhoods together.
Every community deserves the resources to deliver the services people rely on every day. Proud to present Whitaker Borough with the $675,000 federal investment I secured for a new Department of Public Works facility that will protect and strengthen essential public services.
It was a joy to join the Monroeville Fourth of July parade today! The story of America has always been shaped by the folks who organized, marched, voted, and died for our freedoms.
Diversity is a factual description of classrooms in this country and a strength of our democracy. Everyone benefits when students are included and affirmed. Attacks on inclusive policies do nothing but undermine our collective potential.
Trump and Republicans' so-called One Big Beautiful Bill is overhauling our federal student loan system. For me and millions of other borrowers, monthly payments will be increased drastically to match that of rent or a mortgage. Here's what some of those other changes look like.
Private equity is driving up costs and putting youth sports out of reach for too many families. When corporate and special interests are prioritized, people suffer. We need real anti-trust enforcement so our livelihoods are no longer controlled by profit-driven monopolies.
For decades, federal black lung benefits have failed to keep pace with the rising cost of living. I'm introducing the Support Our Miners Act to restore the value of these benefits and ensure coal miners and their families receive the support they've earned.
As Pride Month comes to a close, let's carry this truth with us year-round: our liberation is tied. An attack on trans people, queer people, immigrants, Black and brown folks, or working people is an attack on all of us. Solidarity is our strength.
It was wonderful to welcome Abigail, PA-12's Congressional Art Competition winner, to the Capitol and hear about the inspiration behind her powerful piece, "a lo que conduce la injusticia." Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!"
Trump could have signed a bipartisan housing bill this past week to make life a little more affordable for working Americans. Instead, he's prioritizing restrictions on voting rights. It's clear he does not care about any of us.
Had a great experience touring Community LIFE and seeing how their team helps seniors age with dignity, maintain independence, and remain in their homes. It was a great reminder of why protecting and expanding Medicare is so important for our communities.
Our democracy should belong to the people, not the highest bidder. As long as billionaires and corporate interests can spend unlimited money to influence our elections, working people will be forced to compete with wealth and power. It's time to abolish Super PACs.
Public safety isn't built through fearmongering or expanding surveillance. It's built by investing in housing, health care, violence prevention, and community-led solutions. Grateful to partner with @vera.org for their Serious About Safety Campaign to make that a reality.
You shouldn't be in debt to your employer for leaving a job. @markey.senate.gov and I are demanding answers from companies about their use of coercive stay-or-pay contracts that saddle workers with debt and restrict their freedom to leave. These anti-worker practices must end.
It was an honor to welcome & introduce International @steelworkers.bsky.social President Roxanne Brown on Capitol Hill. As the first woman and first person of color to lead USW, President Brown is standing up for workers & strengthening our labor movement. I'm proud to join her in that fight.
Four years since Dobbs, we're reminded of the need to reform our Courts. Today, women have fewer reproductive rights than a decade ago. Black women are still at greater risk of dying in pregnancy and childbirth. We cannot ignore that this rollback is costing lives.
Voting rights are once again under attack and we must do everything in our power to fight back. Proud to reintroduce the Right to Vote Act with @neguse.house.gov and @ossoff.senate.gov to establish the first-ever federal statutory right to strengthen protections for every voter.
