I'm an Australian journalist talking/writing/broadcasting/posting about sport (particularly AFL football), music, politics and culture. You'll find my stuff at Footyology, ESPN, Australian Community Media and on 3AW.
New iconic duo ... Barnaby Joyce & 'Current Affair' 'Dogman'. #auspol
Why don't we just start calling Photoshop the "Trump Removal Machine"? Anyway, anything which removes that bloated, narcissistic POS from any setting his odious and unwanted presence infects is a valuable tool. JFC what a knob. 🤡💩 #FIFAworldcup #ESPARG
Grant Hansen trying to fire up Derek Kickett and me without a lot of luck. 😂
Congratulations Spain, absolutely deserved, in terms of play, really, one of the most one-sided finals ever. Would have been highway robbery if they hadn't prevailed. #ESPARG #FIFAworldcup
Wow, that's sad. And a shock. Great actor, lovely guy, and a titan of the local film industry. Deepest condolences to Sam's family and friends. RIP.
FYI, been re-running my Top 20 abums video series I did back in 2020 over on Facebook for rock music lovers. Full rundowns on each selection and why it's a personal favourite on the timeline. Check it out and see what you think! #rocotop20
You know, I just can't work out why the Liberal Party has fallen so completely out of touch with contemporary Australia... I mean, look at their forward-thinking, visionary office holders. 😂🤪🙄🤡
Not that the Victorian Libs have ever needed much help shooting themselves in the foot, but how many MPs have done the sort of sustained damage to their own party over a longer period than Moira has? Remarkable. I'm actually not convinced Labor doesn't pay her a retainer! 🤪😂
People talk about the extent to which mainstream media has changed. It really has in lots of ways. Probably the biggest difference I've noticed over my 44-year career though, is that when I started it wasn't completely full of vacuous, grifting narcissistic ^%$*s, and now it is.
Yeah let's round up some of this knob's mates and worst people in the country and ask them what they think. That will be representative of the mood.🙄
After Tommy Robinson, today’s effort is a rogue doctor claiming Warney’s death was because of the Covid vaccine. FMD, not that I thought a vacuous clown like Stefanovic was leaving much of a legacy to begin with, but jeez, way to trash what little credibility you had.
This is an awesome read from Malcolm Knox. There’s a lot to love about Australia, but one of our least impressive traits is our anti-intellectualism. It allows completely fraudulent grifters like Hanson to thrive, and we’ll all pay a price for that.
Definitely the guy to be leading a contemporary-thinking Liberal Party marching boldly straight towards the 1970s.
Neale Daniher was simply a great human. A brilliant and gifted footballer sadly cut down by injury, then an innovative, shrewd & successful AFL coach, then an incredibly courageous, relentless ambassador for research & funding into the scourge of MND. What a leagcy. RIP Neale.
Phil Cleary is a VFA legend but far more importantly a tireless campaigner on male violence against women since the murder of his sister Vicki in 1987. Nearly 40 years on, the stats remain horrific & toxic masculinity still a scourge. Vicki Cleary Day is significant. Support it.
Old footy pics (ongoing series): In 2008, The Age assembled a panel of footy greats to arrive at the 50 greatest VFL/AFL players. I chaired the discussion. Sadly, none of them are still with us. (From left): Bob Davis, Tom Hafey, Ron Barassi, Ken Hands & ('Age' footy writer legend Ron Carter).
It's 31 years today we lost my big brother Steve Connolly at 36. He was a brilliant guitarist & songwriter who helped shape Paul Kelly classics like 'Leaps & Bounds', 'To Her Door' & 'Before Too Long'. He was funny, feisty, entertaining, occasionally infuriating & we’ll always love him. RIP Steve. ❤️
Was in the nosebleed section but still great to see Split Enz turn back the clock last night. So many great songs which still resonate, hard to believe it was all more than 40 years ago! #splitenz
It’s funny how certain passages of commentary will stay with you. I still have this line from Sandy Roberts in 1985 go through my head every time I hear the word “squeeze”! 😂 (PS. That’s Mark Harvey on his way to a seven-goal haul in a 109-point belting of Carlton btw).
Sad to hear of Geoff Ablett's passing. Younger fans knew him mainly because (a) he was Gary's brother & (b) he won four GF sprints. But Geoff was a terrific wingman for in 200 games & two flags in 1976/78, lightning quick, tough, resilient. RIP. (Pic: Rennie Ellis Collection)
More old footy pics: Princes Park, June 1989. Robert Walls sacked as Carlton coach & Alex Jesaulenko has returned as coach to face a media scrum ... that's me looking very serious at the back, can just see the late, great Trevor Grant (right), plus Daryl Timms with the porno mo!
Is the AFL just chasing cash at the expense of its soul? The battle lines are being drawn. My latest for @espnausnz.bsky.social (link in comments)…
I reckon it's fantastic one of the main reasons Collingwood recruited Angus Anderson is because he's a dead ringer for Magpie skipper Danny Rowe in 'The Club'. #aflpieshawks
Just FYI, I sat in the MCC Members (hardly a bastion of progressive politics) on Anzac Day. One guy started to boo the Welcome To Country and was promptly told in no uncertain terms by at least a dozen people to STFU. Was heartening to know most people can respect a small gesture.
Essendon’s biggest issues remain its oldest. My latest for @espnaustralia.bsky.social www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_/...
Pretty hard to miss the contrast in the grief over the sad passing of the ABC's much-loved James Valentine, and reactions to the latest examples of Kyle Sandilands' foulness. Wish radio was full of far more people as nice as James and far fewer professional arseholes like Kyle.
"Thanks Basil. I just want to give you a bit of an insight into the Liberal Party. We’re a bunch of unique individuals..."
