An excerpt from Chapter 1 of Dissolution, the first book in the To Crack A Geode series. Starshade trying to survive and yet still being Starshade. She's doing her best.

$CLOP One long ear swiveled at the distinctive and heartstopping sound of a metal-shod hoof treading on the cracked concrete. Fear redoubled within her, but with all her reserves drained and more exhausted than she’d ever been, her body was suddenly driven more by instinct than intellect. The cottontail froze solid. Barely breathing, her entire body stood stock-still. A stupid instinct, long obsolete yet fundamentally encoded in the DNA by her ancestors. In her enervated state, critically wounded and deeply afraid, those ancient commands coded into her very essence overrode her attempts at rational thought, whispering that this was the best way to evade predators. Freeze, and they won’t see you. Another hoof struck concrete, and another. She could feel the life draining between her crimson-stained fingers, dripping silently on the floor while she waited. Only then did her brain finally register how they were tracking her. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Her very blood was leading them unerringly to the panicked bunny. The switch written into her DNA ticked over from ‘Freeze’ to ‘Flee,’ and Starshade once again bolted, only to round the corner of a rusted old shelf and find… nothing but wall. She spun drunkenly, finding a massive figure far, far too close. Towering what seemed three meters tall, the gray stallion in the blue-and-white uniform (with that stupid Ranger star on his chest) was the perfect image of Texas Protectorate Assembly muscle. He loomed over the lithe rabbit, who usually felt so tall, sending all sorts of alarm bells screaming in her head as she suddenly felt tiny. (Although, admittedly, the chiseled form under the barely modest spandex sent other instinctive warnings bouncing around the back of her mind too.) You are about to die! Stop being horny, you stupid fucking bunny! As had become distressingly common with the deactivation of her visor, there would be no soothing of her fractured thoughts, even when trapped by one of the Teepa thugs...$
