Safe Air Schools approach brings together evidence, national guidance and practical solutions in one place

While long-term investment in school buildings remains essential, there are practical actions that can begin now. Improving school air quality requires action at every level: immediate steps, medium-term planning and long-term change.

Children and staff at school today cannot wait for every building to be refurbished.

This strengthens the case for improving indoor environmental quality, ventilation and thermal comfort in schools as part of a wider strategy to support children’s health, wellbeing and attendance. Safe Air Schools takes a whole-school approach to healthy classroom air.

There had been 47 COVID-19 teacher deaths by *20 April 2020* COVID-19 and other viruses that can cause long-term harm and death are airborne. Clean air improves attendance, health, wellbeing, inclusion and achievement.

Great to participate in 'Delivering a National Allergy Strategy: Next Steps for Allergy Care' last week in Parliament joining, Chris Bloore MP. The National Allergy Strategy recognises IAQ and gives practical steps to improve it including training and air filtration.

At the same time, schools are encouraged to open windows to help keep classrooms cool. The DfE ventilation guidance highlights the importance of monitoring indoor air quality, but is guidance alone enough? Without clear requirements, monitoring can remain inconsistent. 2/3

Artificial grass pitches can reach 50–70°C+ in hot weather. As temperatures rise, some studies suggest chemicals from rubber and plastic materials may be released more readily into the air. Concerns have been raised about exposure from 3G sports surfaces.
