This is known as the Mausoleum at Downhill Demesne. Strictly speaking, it is a cenotaph rather than a mausoleum as it was built in memory of the Earl Bishop's brother.
It was built between 1779 and 1783 and was modelled on the 1st century BC Roman mausoleum of the Julii family at Saint Remy, France.
Originally the structure was topped by a circular temple of 8 columns supporting a cupola topped by an urn and containing a statue of the Earl Bishop's brother.
This part fell down in the 'Big Wind' of 6th January 1839 and the fragments remain scattered around the base of the column - apart from the headless remains of the statue which now stand in the Bishop's Gate Gardens.
